DVC member - out of points - want to rent, I guess?!?!

We ran out of points and want to head to Vero Beach (if it's even possible) in August before the kids head back to school. We have 32 points (2006) left that we could use, but would need 289 total for a week. My question is: what is the difference - transfer/renting? Would the reservation be in my name? Could I put 257 with my 32 and make my own reservation? I don't really understand what I would need to do? Can someone explain it to me? I read Mousesavers site about renting points, but it made it sound scary and iffy.

And, I guess, does anyone have points for us to use? at what rate per point? etc.?

Your options are to rent the reservation from another member or to have points transferred into your account so you can make the reservation. (If you choose the transfer method- you should make sure you can get the dates you want BEFORE the transfer.)

Either option will require some trust, so ask questions, get references, read their DIS posts and speak with the other member on the phone to be sure you are comfortable with them.

The Rent/Trade Board has been a great resource for many - members and non-members alike. Just do your homework before taking any action.

Once you decide which option you wish to use, post the dates and/or transfer requests on the Rent/Trade Board.

Why does it matter in the rental posts what home resort and use year for rentals? I want to get points to use August 05 at Vero Beach. Are there certain offers that I should look at ans some to ignore?

I'm confused. My post was moved here, so I hope someone here can help me out.

The Use Year and resort are usually offered as basic information. In your case, any member can make a reservation at VB for August, 2005 at this time as we are within 7 months - so resort and Use year are unimportant as long as the points are valid for August reservations. I'd just post the dates you want (or ask for a transfer if that's what you're interested in doing) or respond to one of the offers to rent already posted by members.

For reservations more than 7 months from now, the home resort is useful information. The Use Year is useful to know when the points may be used. For someone wanting a trip in October, September, 2004 points won't be helpful at all.

Thanks so much for the info, but one more question if I might ...

What is the difference between renting points and transferring points? As in ... if the points get transferred to me, don't they become mine to use or lose? The member can't get them back, right?

That's correct. Transferring points is an irreversible transaction. Once transferred, the points will belong to you to do with as you wish.

Since transferring is supposed to be accomplished without any remuneration, DVC will not intercede on behalf of either member if there is any dispute regarding the transaction.

With a rental, the other member will retain control of the reservation right until you check in at the resort. Since we have had minimal problems in that regard, I don't consider it to be an issue, but everyone should be aware of how the DVC program works regarding these reservations.

Since you are a member already, you should check with MS to see if there is availablity for your dates in August.

When I checked a few days ago (great minds think alike), there was no consecutive nights available until after 8/18/05 and even then nothing larger than the studio/Inns.

Taking your advice, I called MS about VB availablity and you're right - there's nothing available.

We're used to going to BCV in Spetmeber and practically having WDW to ourselves with the crowd levels. WE went in May/June and boy were the crowds larger than we're used to. I can't imagine the crowd level at the beginning of August - that is why we were going to try VB (figured away from the Disney crowds).

There is availablity at OKW.

I guess I have more thinking to do!!

Buy more points with a resale at OKW(or any other resort).
