DVC Member-Only Merchandise?

I was at the gift shop at Wilderness Lodge last week (had gone over for dinner at Whispering Canyon). We found "Disney Vacation Club Member" water bottles (among other things). When we went to buy them the woman asked "Well, are you Disney Vacation Club Members?" I thought she was just being friendly, but my sister asked if you had to be a member to buy them, and the woman said that you do need to be a member. We told her we are members (which we are), so she sold them to us. Never asked to see a DVC card or anything. I didn't realize that they wouldn't sell the merchandise to non-members, has anybody else had this experience?

I guess I've never even thought about that. OF course, I've been a member so many years and the new merchandise hasn't been of much interest to me.

I did have this experience at VB when we drove over there for a day trip several years ago. We're never asked at OKW, all the CMs recognize us. I wonder if that is a good thing ?:rotfl:

Of all the things DVC could choose to enforce this seems almost laughable.

Why in the world would they care who purchases 'member' merchandise?

They can't stop point morphers but by gosh they can stop non-members from buying member merchandise.

Glad I never tried to pick up any of this stuff before I was a member, I could have gotten 50 lashes with a wet noodle.

Thanks for reporting on this, it's my 'ironic moment for the day'.

The only thing I can remember getting "carded" on was when I bought my limited edition DVC watch a few years ago at BWV... That was a higher ticket item though..

I got "carded" buying a dvc pin at the pin station in DTD.

This happened to us too! The pins for DVC members only though. Any of the other merchandise should be for anyone's use. It does seem silly to police this..

A bit off topic--sorry, don't mean to hi-jack this thread...is there anywhere to buy DVC member merchandise when not in the parks? I'd like to order some things before heading down there again...

ANd yeah...I think it is totally bizarre that this rule gets enforced. I mean, these types of consumer products have huge mark-ups on them, so they bring in a great profit...why curtail profits???

On an opposite note .. we had dinner at Artist Point during out last trip and stopped in the store at WL to check out the DVC merchandise. I couldn't find it and the clerk I asked had no idea what I was talking about! I had to explain what DVC was .. and still she had to go ask.

I bet we know some web-sights that could get them added in as a perk to your discounted vacation. :lmao:

I too was carded when buying member-only pins.

I would think that because some of the member-only merchandise is limited in quantity, DVC feels an obligation to ensure that that who it's available to--member--especially when it could turn around and show up on Ebay.

I think it's a good thing that DVC cards for things like DVC pins and watches. I'd be mad if there was a limited edition pin or watch that was supposed to be only available to members, but was instead being sold to anybody off the street. I like getting DVC perks. It makes me feel special. :sunny:

I believe all of the DVC resorts have DVC merchandise in them... Your best bet may be to call one of the resort stores, buy it via credit card, and then have them ship it to you..

Some of the items at OKW that I can remember: DVC blanket, DVC towel, waterbottle, luggage tag, deck of cards, polo shirts, jackets, mens and womens watches.
