DVC Hawaii to have DCL Cruise Ship Terminal?

I'm on the island and don't see this happening right now...the locals are not receptive to additional seagoing vessels and the construction of a pier would probably not be well recieved. The Superferry battle is still ongoing and it's gotten ugly between both sides and even between islands.

The piers at Aloha Tower are more than 1/2 hour away from Ko'olina. Probably closer to 45 mins, depending on traffic. (which has gotten HORRIBLE)

I can't see another pier getting built there either. A few of the existing pier/ports in the islands have long needed to be repaired/replaced and even this is not being approved because of the negative impact it will cause on the ocean. Disney was able to build this way in the Bahamas because they don't have the same environmental protection restrictions we do.

There is no way the dredging that needs to take place can be done under the current restrictions that exist. The same thing happened with the Long Beach port plans, will happen in Hawaii. It will get scratched. Sorry, us planet huggers are big ole fun suckers.

Just curious, a question for the OP:

Are you the author of the referenced article? The byline at the link says by Dwelty - I was wondering if that was you?

Good question.

An even better question is: Why hasn't he answered it? He's been back a few times to the thread.

I have NO problem with the OP posting a link to an article he wrote for another website. I do have a problem with the appearance that he stumbled upon the article which was written by a third party and that he was posting it as a "heads up". Take credit when credit is due dwelty!

Yes, of course I am the author. I figured I made that pretty clear when I signed it with my DIS screen name. Also I have been pretty vocal in defending it.

By the way, since the article has been published it has been linked to several Disney websites including a very well know and respected site that has inside sources that have corroborated this. Of course there is the posibility that the Cruise terminal portion of the plan could be dropped if there is too much government red tape, Nothing is final until you see it being built. The lesson of Eagle Pines is not lost on any of us.

I can not imagine Disney building their own cruise ship terminal near the new resort. If they did anything they would just have DCL ships dock at the existing terminal next to the Aloha Tower. Building a cruise ship terminal is an immense undertaking and involves a lot more than just building the terminal. All kinds of maritime laws come into play, etc. Plus you also have to start dealing with things like the TSA, dock workers, transportation, etc.

Yup, I'm with you. Can't imagine it. I cannot see the financial benefit to them having their own. If it ever paid for itself, it would be a LONG LONG time. Maybe their own building for departures/arrivals, but that's about it. If I have to eat my words in 4 years, I'll gladly do it... ;)

not sure you read it correctly. Its not being built or paid for by Disney

It would be another pier for the state of Hawaii for potentially all cruise lines to use

thats my take on it anyway

Yes, you are correct. This harbor is owned by the State. It would be built and operated by them for any interested Cruise line, not just Disney.

I will be one of the first in line to book a DCL Hawiian cruise! :dance3:
I have wanted to do a cruise of the Hawiian Islands for years now, but never really wanted to go on another brand cruise line. To have a Disney Hawiian cruise would be like a dream come true! I hope it does happen, after all they will need to have places for those 2 new ships to go!:cool1:

I'm very excited about all this news. We are also owners at Marriotts Ko Olina and this is wonderful news. We go there every other year, doing Disney the other year. The tought of a place to trade into AND possible DCL being there will just make it more wonderful. Ko Olina is a beautiful place. We look forward to our visits.

Just one correction on the article in the begining of the thread. It was the MAGIC that came to California in 2005 not the Wonder....
