Is there such of thing, and if so what are the benefits of declaring oneself as this? Has anyone had one?

Have done it several times.... There are special events (illinations viewing,sunset savana, breakfast at tony's to name a few) that are worthwhile doing.

Outside of those..... not much..... You get to be close together if you are in multiple rooms( That might not a benefit! ) you get a button upon check in....

To request call MS and request a # .... a few days later you get an email with the GG #.

Unless you want to go to the Grand Gathering events offered at an additional price, this is a waste of time. I had to register 9 of us for a GG last November. I was on the phone for over 25 minutes giving all the info needed--everyone's name, ressie number, address etc. So not worth it. They will make your ADRs but can not guarantee your party will be able to sit together.
