We have 2 DVC Gold APs sitting in my account - not used. We have a small trip upcoming in March and a long trip in July 2021 with another long trip expected within a year of the July 2021st. trip.
1. Will I be able to renew the GOLD AP when it expires next March - are they doing that nowadays?
2. Should I just buy the 4 day and get the 2 free (or make some other not-to-speak of plans) for this trip to preserve the AP?
3. How out of it am I?

We're leaving in 24 days and I have not been studying at all

you've got enough trips, I'd probably use it and roll the dice for future. Otherwise, you're at an easy $1200+ for those trips. OTOH, will they sell AP in the future???? And, even though they let people renew this year, will that apply next year if they discontinue AP? Who knows.
IMHO, discounted DVC AP are a great marketing tool for buying direct. For a family who regularly goes to WDW, I can't think of another reason to buy direct. And it costs them nothing--so why would they discontinue it--at least for DVC? And, if gen pop AP is no longer--that'd make it even better, IMHO. Imagine, if the only way you can get an AP is buying DVC direct?! Surely, someone at WDW-DVC has thought of that??

Yes, they’re renewing APs now, just not selling brand new ones.

I’m not sure about whether to save the AP vouchers or activate them in March. For us it would depend on whether our plans for after July 2022 meant it would be reasonable to renew in March 2022 to use in July 2022 and again before it expired.

We are in the same boat. We have two Gold APs bought last January for a November 2020 trip we ended up cancelling. We are supposed to go this November, but we aren't even sure that trip will happen. There are still too many things up in the air. These are our first APs and unlike you, we won't renew, and may not buy again for a while (even if they begin selling them again). We aren't sure whether we want to "blow" our valuable APs until things are more normal and Disney is a full experience again. I know we are crazy since others would LOVE to have our APs!

Thank you. Normaly, I'd be fine using them now and knowing they are renewing makes me feel better. There's just a little voice that says maybe I should hold on to them. Have there been any credible discussions about APs disappearing in Florida like California? We likely will work on our March - use or lose the points trip and don't even need the 4 + 2 DAYS PASSES.

There were many discussions when DL announced the end of their APs, about the differences between AP holders on both coasts. Obviously no one knows, but given that WDW is selling new APs to those who cancelled last summer and renewal APs to anyone who has a current one, my personal opinion is that WDW will continue their AP program. There might be changes, but I think they’ll continue it.

PS ours expire in March, and we’re renewing.

The use or lose trip---do you want to go in the parks? Would a couple days be enough? The buy 4 get 2 free would certainly be useful for that trip if you want more than a couple days. Since you know July will be 10 days, and seem to indicate a similar length trip by/before the next July, that would be a good place to use the AP. As CarolynFH said "For us it would depend on whether our plans for after July 2022 meant it would be reasonable to renew in March 2022 to use in July 2022 and again before it expired."
