Is there anything set up within DVC so that members may donate points in order for families who are fighting illnesses to be able to stay at WDW? I know of a family who the Mom has cancer. They have 2 (boy and girl, both over 5/under 8) little ones and I would love to send them to The World for a week. Unfortunately, we've already used next use year points (we're always a year in the hole) and won't get any more until October of next year. I've already contacted the Make A Wish Foundation but they only deal with sick kids, not sick parents. Any help or contact info that anyone knows of would be wonderful. Thanks for your help, everyone!

DVC does not have a program to donate points in that way. Individual owners would have to make a reservation, similar to renting a reservation.

the point transfer limitations keep this from working very well. if make-a-wish had a DVC contract, they could only accept one transfer in per year.

you are free to use your pts to make a reservation that you give away for nothing.

keep in mind that U.S. tax laws prohibit deducting this as a charitable contribution, though.

you are also free to use your pts to make a reservation that you rent for cash - and then donate that cash to make-a-wish or a similar organization. that contribution likely would be deductible.

but similar to how you cannot "rent" points, you also can't donate them.

That's kind of what I thought but thanks for the help. I've never really raised money for something like this but I'm going to try and get these folks a little magic. They need it. Thanks for your input, though! :thumbsup2

There are many organizations out there that are just not as well known as Make a Wish that do all sorts of things to lift the spirits of ill adults.

Google: ill adults wish

You will find many.

My only concern with booking a room for an organization such as that is that, technically, I would be the one responsible for any damage that was incurred.

If there were a way to transfer points out into a holding account that can be used by an entity, it would be out of our hands.

I sure wish something like that could be set up. And, if it were, members who donated small numbers of left-over points shouldn't be hit with the transfer rule if they had already transferred points out or in for some other reason.

Giving the mechanics of the way the program works, however, I am not sure they could institute such a program.

One easy way is to transfer your points in exchange for cash to some other Member for their own use, and donate that cash to the charity of your choice. My not-a-tax-lawyer-understanding is that you would have to claim the net proceeds (rental fee minus dues and advertising expenses) as passive income on a Schedule E, but can deduct the entire cash donation if you itemize on Schedule A, subject to all the usual limits of course.

A transfer also insulates you from any liability over the use of those points. You could also rent a stay to someone, which carries an additional (but IMO negligible) risk.

I like the donate points idea. I'm not a DVC member yet but will be soon. If I had some left over points or just wanted to help out, that is a really neat way. Of course, something would need to be set up and that doesn't sound like it would be simple.

This would be a worthwhile endeavor for sure.

Legally I don't think this is possible as each member is only allowed one transfer in or out per UY. The charity would have to be sent up as a member and therefore only allowed one transfer in per UY, or Disney would have to allow others to have mulitple transfers a UY.
