So I just joined a FB dvc site. There's a few people who are seemingly pissed and rude about the resale market-- and makes an effort to put down/denigrate those who bought resale.

I'm quite taken aback. I know a ton of people who bought direct... And wiil buy resale going forward.

We also bought cash and have the means to buy direct... But why would I? It's a depreciating asset, but much less so on the resale market. It just made logical sense to go via the secondary resale market.

Just so weird and off putting. The guys profile isn't that impressive (not that one needs to be impressive for me to hold off feeling offended)... But it just doesn't make sense.

Has anyone else encountered this "I am better than thou due to my direct point status" attitude?

He even called resale points "tainted". Tainted?!

Sounds like that site may have attracted some DVC sales reps or people who didn't know about resale before they bought. Can't imagine any other reasons for that attitude.

Not worth the time to argue with them, and certainly not people whose opinion I would value. Does FB have an IGNORE feature? ;) :teeth:

I bought direct several times, but bought resale one of my last contracts. When folks ask me I always recommend resale. But I do tell them the difference.

I brought the one contract I have direct in 2001. I don't think there was much of a resale market then.

Hoping to do purchase an additional contract in about a year or two and will definitely purchase that one resale, unless when the new DVC units at Wilderness are being sold DVC offers current owners a fabulous deal for add-ons with extentions of existing contracts.

I've not encountered the "better than thou" attitude because they bought direct, though there are certainly times here on Disboards that the attitude skates very close to that for those that bought resale.

The particular individual you reference certainly sounds bitter, for whatever reason. It looks like there's a 'block' feature in FB for someone you've friended, but I don't know about an 'ignore' capability for anyone in a group.

Thx. Just so weird. He called resale points "tainted"! Tainted points?!

I think he might be resentful ;). Doesn't he realize the resale market actually makes his investment in dvc, albeit he bought direct, hold its value? Depending on where he bought and when, the value of his initial investment may have grown, or at least stayed the same? All this.. Because of the resale market... Where people happily and gladly buy "tainted" points.

Some people!!

;) good night!

I've encountered many rude individuals on the many DVC-related groups on Facebook.

So, I stay away from most of the DVC groups on Facebook.

I have 2 contracts with DVC, and both were direct. The ONLY reason they were direct was on the first contract at SSR I didn't know any better. The 2nd was at VGF, and being a new resort I had to go direct. I am now looking to add more points at VGF, and will be going resale.

The only reason I would be direct again would be if a new resort went for sale that I wanted, like possibly YC.

The individual you encountered is either a DVC sales rep as others have said, or a very stupid individual.

I have purchased points directly and via resale, and scratch my head at the "tainted" comment. The only thing I can figure he meant is that people who purchase resale can't use those points for some minor things, like use them for DCL. The person is probably a sales agent and bitter about the resale market.

I really don't care what anyone else thinks of how/what/when I bought my points, they're my points and I'm thrilled with them. People on Facebook (and all around the Web, really) like to judge other people. This direct vs. resale thing is just another example of that.

I bought direct in 1999 because there were very few BWV resales at the time plus the price difference wasn't as much as it is today (I bought at $65). I could care less how anyone else bought their points. If I was buying more points, I would go resale. No way would I pay $135-$165.

I've encounted FaceBook users with the same attitude. i'm not going to get riled up over it. I'm happy with my "tainted" points and I dont care what others think! We saved enough with resale that we have enough points to go 5-6 weeks a year.

I am surprised at reading this. Usually it's the other way around. (ours are all direct).

I agree. On the boards I read they act like you are a fool to pay direct prices. I don't get "tainted". For DVC resorts, they work the same. You can't do Disney Collection but those points are ridiculously high.

I think it's perfectly legit if someone is wary of the resale market. I was, at first. Found a TON of mistakes on the contract.... Points listed that weren't there, etc. They were not the most detail oriented, shall we say. And their errors favored the seller.

I ended up getting a deal that wasn't the best due to my inexperience (my 2nd resale was much smoother). I'm still a little upset at that one. Could have probably saved $1-2k if I knew what I was doing. Overpaid, didn't negotiate well, etc. Doh.

I was definitely worried about getting scammed... And given that dvc is a 5 figure purchase, sometimes people would rather err on the side of caution. I almost went direct instead due to my fears. Glad I didn't.

Note-- I went with one of the big resellers that's often named on this site. If I was so scared with a legit place, imagine how other people are.

That being said-- there really is no difference btwn resales and direct in the 2ndary market. So I don't understand the chip on the fb users shoulders! So weird.

I also understand why people would prefer to buy direct... It's their choice. If they have the money, or don't mind the extra cost, more power to them.

Personally, I'm happy with my 5 figures savings over direct :).

Tainted points!!
