I received a new DVC membership card in the mail today. I will not even comment how disappointed I am in the blandness of the card. But the card states it expires in 2021. My previous card never had an expiration date on it. This is not even close to when my DVC membership expires at AKV and SSR. Can anyone provide any insight?

All of the new cards have an expiration date. And no, it isn't near when your DVC expires.

The theory is that some people are selling their contracts but still using the card for discounts.

I'm actually surprised that the expiration is 5 years from now if their intent is to stop the fraudulent discounts on purchases from former members. If there's that much discount theft going on then the cards should expire every couple of years. OP the other intent with the new cards is to distinguish direct purchasers and those resale purchasers grandfathered in before the latest perk restrictions - new resale purchasers will not receive membership cards at all. The look of the new cards doesn't bother me as the old cards weren't all that. I'm just glad I finally received ours so I didn't have to print one out off the computer.

I appreciate the information on this. I did a double take when I saw the expiration date, but I figured that it was kind of like how you receive new bank cards every few years. I did not realize that new resale purchasers would not receive membership cards, but it makes sense given the recent changes. The design of the card does not really bother me. It lives in my purse dreaming of pixie dust unless I am at WDW anyway. It is very sad right now...

My card expires in 2042. I don't know what you all are talking about....

...

Just kidding. :)

I would be sure to get any future resale purchases done by that 2021 date on your card. You can bet Mr. Potrock will have another letter ready on 1/1/2022.

At least you have a card. I am still waiting. As to expiration date, the cards back in the 1990s also had one, and upon expiration they would send new cards. That was discontinued but I cannot recall exacty when except probably the early 2000's, and the believed reason for going to a non-expiring card was to contain the costs of making and sending new cards to the DVC membership that was growing substantially.

They're balancing the need to expire the cards and make them invalid for discounts vs. the expense of sending new cards more often.

Like he'll still be around....

Only DVC knows why they do what they do. Our member since date was wrong before, it's wrong now and the expiration date makes no sense.
