Are there any special things that are discounted for guest staying DVC if you are renting points or anything that the owner can do on your behalf?

Technically as a renter you are not entitled to any of the perks that the member gets. There's a chance you might "accidentally" get free internet, but you're not supposed to.

If the member "gave" you the reservation for no compensation, you might be entitled to some benefits/perks. But since you paid the owner for the reservation, you are not entitled to any perks/discounts.

Thanks fers. I certainly do not want to take anything I am not entitled to. I saw on another site where somebody mentioned DVC discounts for renters, but never gave more info - so I was not sure.

For many DVC discounts you have to show your membership card. I just bought MNSSHP tickets yesterday. Even though I had to give my member number to get the discount and paid for them over the phone, I was told to have my membership card with me when I pick them up from will call.

You may receive some shopping/dining discounts by virtue of your room key designation..it depends upon the server/CM. And as another poster mentioned, you may receive free internet. You will not receive any discounts on park admission media, or Halloween or Christmas party admissions.

What type of shopping/dining discounts? and what do you mean by park admission media?

If I make a reservation for my DS and DDIL (DS is an associate member), should they get free internet?

From what I have gathered on this website, renters get free internet unless their owners specifically tell the resort that there is a renter staying on points.

Discounts change often, but there are usually several restaurants offering 10% to 20% off, but they are often limited to weekdays, or lunches.

Shopping are things like a free candy sample at Ghirardelli or a small percentage discount at a handful of stores, nothing major.

DVC Members receive a $100 discount on annual park passes at WDW, and discounts on select nights to the Halloween and Christmas parties. You MUST show the DVC Membership card for those, along with photo ID.

Thanks Chuck! How do you find out the available discounts? Do you just ask at every one?

There will be a "portable perks" (I think they still hand this out). But remember, you aren't entitled to any of them. If you get them, great. If you don't, please just accept it. We've lost a lot of perks over the years and we don't want "its more of a pain to offer this" to be of use.

Honestly, there aren't many of them and they aren't convenient. They are the unpopular restaurants over lunch, primarily - the ones that still need to offer a discount - which since the advent of the DDP isn't many.

When we ask, we have almost always been asked to provide our blue DVC member card. They seem to have gotten much more strict on this in the past few years. (We do usually forget to ask though, and the past few trips we've had a TIW, which is usually a better deal).

Also, to the best of my knowledge, there is nothing that specifies which benefits (i.e. internet) are free to "guests" but not to "renters." Our contract merely states that no member benefits are available if the member was compensated for their points, but some member benefits may be extended to guests of members. It doesn't specify which benefits. Again, you'll probably get it for free, but plan on paying for it and if it shows up on your bill, just pay it.

Disney has never seemed thrilled about the rental situation (why should they, it directly competes with their cash rentals) and in the past has changed policies to the determent of all members because of a few members and renters.

I'm fairly sure you will do all this anyway, but there have been cases where renters have caused scenes. That isn't conducive long term to easy rentals which benefit people on both sides of the transaction.
