DVC Discount eliminated at Ghiradelli

Just got back from BWV, 1/9- 1/14 so hubby could run in marathon. Ghiradelli Shop in Marketplace, where we used to get 10% discount, now says no more discount, but free candybar with each order of $10 or more. We had a big group, spent $50, and I made them ring it up in 5 different orders so I could get my five candy bars. Are new discounts ever added when others are discontinued?

Ghiradelli is an independent company leasing space at DtD, as are many of the shops and restaurants. Their offers will change and be renegotiated from time to time. DVC has no direct contol over discounts offered by outside entities as a courtesy to DVC members. Discounts/benefits change often.

DVC has no "direct control", and 60 Minutes didn't pay directly for the Michael Jackson interview, but these are all related corporations, and the bottom line is that DVC certainly has the ability within the Disney corporate structure to maintain a level of perks for its members, if it was so inclined. If and until a replacement discount could be negotiated with a tenant at the Marketplace, for example, a discount at the Bakery on Main Street USA in MK could be provided. I understand that the Discounts/Benefits are subject to change, but I have not seen them change in our favor in the last 4 years that I've been a DVC member- correct me if I've missed something!

20% discounts at several Epcot restaurants is nothing to sneeze at. And no, Disney can NOT tell an independent leaseholder who or who not to give discounts and perks to. Tell me, if you were to open a business, would you want your landlord saying, yes, you can have the location but you HAVE to give discounts to whomever I chose? A perk at Ghiradelli has NOTHING to do with a perk at a Disney operated establishment.

WAIT! DVC owes you a discount. Why? (And what does this have to do with Michael Jackson anyway?)
Ghiradelli as far as I know has NO ownership in common with Disney. They lease space. They gave a discount because they felt it drove business to them. Their marketing stategy changed. That does not entitle us to any other discount someplace else.

Also, the discount was replaced with a free gift. Now that might not be worth as much to you, but you are still getting something free!

As a Disney stockholder, I see NO reason why Disney would want to give me a discount at the Main Street Bakery for example. It has long lines and is making a profit. It does not need any discounts to attact customers and make money.

Personally, I find the discounts a 'perk' and certainly don't get upset if they are taken away. They were not guranteed.

Did I miss something? We've been DVC members for 2 years, and I never knew about a 10% discount at Ghiardellis. And we love Ghiardellis. Gotten several of the chocolate bars as free gifts over the past 2 years, but never any discount. When was that? When we went there shortly after we joined and showed our card, we only got the candy bar, no discount.

If I remember correctly (and I may be wrong), there was a 10% discount at Ghiradelli's for a few months after they opened. But with folks insisting that orders be rung up separately just to get a candy bar? Hmmm....I wonder how long any perk at Ghiradelli will last.

Way to stick it to The Man!!!

I bought some chocolate there at New Years, and I received my free and yummy chocolate candy bar, which is what the discount has been for quite a while now. On my receipt there was an offer for 10% off on my next purchase. Have you checked your receipts? You may have a discount for your next visit, or one you could have used for the remainder of your purchase that day.:)

The only offer I've seen in years is the free chocolate bar, and a small one at that, from Ghirardelli. I gladly take it anyway when I stock up on my favorite candies.

As with anything, offers do change and are subject to elimination at any time. I don't fret over a few bucks in savings when my free park passes are a distant memory. :worried:

A free candy bar with a $10 purchase has been my understanding of the discount all along....at least the last 5 years.

Checking the portable perks folder, as far back as September of 2002, maybe even earlier,I found:

"Ghirardelli Soda Fountain & Chocolate Shop: Receive a sweet gift with each purchase of $10 dollars or more." The last three times we were there, there was a young lady handing out un wrapped individual pieces of chocolate just for walking in the door of the store. {not the ice cream parlor} She used tongs and gave you a napkin with it.

I don't recall there being a 10% DVC discount at Ghiradelli's either, only the free gift with $10 purchase. My DW and I have stopped at G's several times over the past several years, but have never been able to pass that $10 mark. I'm the only one who "pigs out" on the sundae! :teeth:

Yes indeed. This is exactly the way it was on our October '03 trip.
