Hi, I swear I had read somewhere that there was going to be a DVC at Carribean Beach Resort, does anyone know if this is true?

There's been lots of rumors - and so far that's all it is...for now. Were it to come to fruition, it will create an interesting situation - the "moderate" DVC. Obviously, they would then have DVC at a resort with a lot less amenities than all other DVCs. This would raise all sorts of questions. How would it be priced? Would they add some additional amenities to the resort (like bring back boat rentals)? Etc.

If their most recent trend of converting existing rooms into DVC instead of building brand new resorts were to continue...from their standpoint, why not move on to the resort where there are over 2,100 rooms?

This one doesn't seem to make a lot of sense to me. However, given how Disney seems to be "all in" on DVC lately, I wouldn't be shocked.

Correct it's been said that will be one of DVCs next focuses. We won't know it's true until it's announced but wilderness lodge is supposedly next after the Polynesian.

Yeah, I think the CBR rumor is just that, for now. It seems pretty solid that making over some rooms in WL is next, and then there's talk of some of YC going to DVC.

If they did this to CBR, it would almost have to be a lower point resort, similar to OKW, and they would also have to increase the amenities as well. I think the likelyhood of this happening is pretty low.

wilderness lodge already has dvc resorts. Villas at Wilderness lodge.

Jim Hill has reported both - more DVC at Wilderness Lodge and then probably at CBR after that. There is an Unofficial Guide Podcast all about DVC.

As well as the spirit a poster on wdwmagic who has a very good track record with getting things right.

Correct but more is coming

Yes, they are going to increase the # of Villas. See the below article. Though I think this still falls under the "rumor" category, it is an all-but-confirmed level rumor. Note there is some discussion of the CBR plans as part of this article - towards the end. There's some pretty interesting stuff there. I am not sure how a DVC Tower would fit into the overall Carribean Beach theme. The one thing mentioned is that it doesn't seem to be a "moderate DVC".

And it's supposed to be only the start of adding more villas to resorts that already have them and not new construction just retrofitting already existing rooms. Disney is doing this to make occupancy numbers look better.

There are plans drawn up and were posted on the FW site a year or so ago, for a western themed resort. It was said to be all DVC, but more likely be both DVC and a regular deluxe resort.

It is to be between L and WL, on the lake with more units over the water. This is where River Country is or was.

If you read that article I linked about, they mention this with a 2018 possible start of construction. So, it's still in the pipeline.

That project has been on again off again.

I doubt we will see the FW DVC plans come to fruition anytime soon. I think we are far more likely to see more conversion at existing resorts, specifically WL and perhaps others, first. Not only is this path far cheaper, but it also helps with another "hot button" metric: low occupancy levels in the regular resort rooms. This path is a win-win for Disney, as they can guarantee return guests with DVC all while artificially manipulating supply/demand to keep or raise "rack rates" in the remaining rooms that will not be converted, all while making DVC seem like the best deal on the block.

I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around the notion of DVC coming to the moderates. I just don't see it happening, but I guess we can't rule anything out, now can we?

Cheaper is the key word in this. That's why this project hasn't come to be. You have to demolish RC and make the land build able for a resort which is way more than they have to spend to just convert rooms.

IF this happens--and it's at least 5 years away--it would NOT be a "moderate" DVC. The DVC villas would be all new construction. Other resort amenities would be brought up to par as deemed necessary.

The lines between "Value", "Moderate" and "Deluxe" have become increasingly blurred in recent years. A resort like Art of Animation isn't really Value, nor is it Moderate. Many would argue that Old Key West and Saratoga Springs are not on par with other deluxe DVCs. Even within a category like Deluxe you could easily establish a hierarchy with certain resorts ranked higher than others. (Prices tell us a lot in this regard.)

Still, DVC has no intention of selling lower-priced accommodations. A DVC on Caribbean Beach property would not consist of 240 sq ft villas costing 7 points per night. The villas would be new construction with layouts and amenities comparable to prior DVC properties.

I hear what you are saying, and generally think along the same lines myself. But if Caribbean Beach DVC will be similar in terms of accommodations / amenities, I would imagine that it would be priced comparably to other existing DVC options, too. Who in their right mind would be willing to pay ~$150/point for CBR with Poly/GF selling in and around the same price point (give or take $10-20/point)? Regardless of how they dress up the actual units, they would still be putting deluxe lipstick (and a deluxe price tag) onto a moderate pig. I think this would be an incredibly difficult sell unless the resort were to be priced accordingly.

This leads to my belief that DVC will not be coming to a moderate resort, at least anytime soon. I think we will see the current story of conversion being played out at other deluxe resorts. Today, the Poly. Tomorrow, WL. After that, maybe YC will see some conversion? Maybe more rooms over at Boardwalk after that? I think all of these options seem more logical than targeting the moderates. Heck, I even think they dust off the FW DVC plans before they start tackling the moderates.

HI Pete, ......like so many projects........you hear about them and then they fade away and then return!

That project has been on again off again.

The story was they were debating on which to start first, the western or the villas at the GF. They obviously decided the FG.

As Pete said they have pushed the western back to 2018, so they maybe starting another resort before the western.
