DVC AP renewal?

I see that the DVC AP renewal is 20% cheaper than a new AP. But does the new pass still have the expiration date based on the "old" date or the new one? Here's the scenario-DH's AP expires 10/5/2015. He wants to go to WDW later in the month next year, and buy a renewal. So if we go 10/20/2015, he'll be within the 30 days and eligible for a renewal. However, will that pass have an expiration of 10/20/2016 or will it be 10/5/2016? We've never renewed an AP, so haven't encountered this.

Expiration will be based on the previous pass. That's the reason for a separate renewal rate.

It will expire 10/5/2016. You'll need to buy a new AP if you want to go 10/20/2016. Then it will be effective until 10/20/2017.
