DVC Annual Pass Renewal - New Expiration Date?

I just renewed our DVC Annual passes (for just my husband and I) and had planned to let our childrens' passes expire and purchase new on our next trip with kids in October. I wanted to confirm with member services that our passes would still expire on the original anniversary date but member services told me they would not and instead would have the anniversary date of when they are first used. HUH? I repeated....so my original pass expired 4/13/15 and I just renewed them now 5/1/15......won't be using them until 7/27/15, so I'll have a new expiration date of 7/27/16 and was told 'YES'. That's not how I understood this process worked and is why we waited until we had enough trips to decide if the renewal made more sense or if we let them expire and buy them again new. Did I have this wrong, or did I just get an incorrect member service answer maybe? Can anyone confirm? TIA

The CM was incorrect. Renewals will extend the expiration date by a year. We have renewed our passes several times now and only the year changes with each renewal (month/day remain the same).

Thanks erionm - one more question. I just linked the 'renewal certficate' to My Disney Experience and the expiration shows there as 12/31/2030? When you've renewed, did you see a future date that far in advance and once activated for the first time, does the expiration date revert back to your original day/month? Thank you!

This is what is says on the WDW website. It sounds like it is still a normal renewal date.

Annual Passes – Frequently Asked Questions
Q.

When can I renew my Annual Pass?

A.

You can renew your Annual Pass up to 60 days before and 30 days after the pass expiration date. Keep in mind that your renewed Annual Pass will expire one year from your Anniversary Date, regardless of when you actually renew.

Regarding the date on MDE, the expiration date will change to match the 1 year from your renewal anniversary when you activate your AP at one of the Guest Relations at WDW. My AP did. My renewal was for 11/7 and I entered the park on 11/29. Now the expiration is shown as 11/7/16. Before I used it at WDW it showed an expiration date of 12/31/21 or something like that.

Thank you! It was the date on MDE combined with what MS said that was really throwing me off. I figured that was all too good to be true

In your case it might be preferable to buy a new AP rather than renew. It somewhat depends on your future travel plans for 2015/2016. By renewing, your AP will expire on 4/13/16. If you were to buy a voucher for a new pass, once redeemed the AP would expire on 7/27/16.

If you renew and use the renewal rate, the expiration date of any AP is the same as the original expiration date.

If you let the AP lapse and then pay the full new price instead the expiration date will be one year from the date of activation of the new AP.

As a general rule if there is more than two months between the current expiration date and the next planned use, it is advantageous to just pay the price for the new AP and get the new expiration date.
