DVC and Resort Guest and Other Perks: How to Keep Track of Them All?

We have not figured out a way to keep track of all the Perks we do and do not have.

I wish there was somekind of computer program that had it all built in. You could tell it where you were going (which parts of which Parks or Downtown Disney) a day or two ahead, and it would tell you what you might want to think of doing a day or two ahead of time (such as restraurant priority seating booking at the places you were going or along the route) and you could then take a hand-held version along that would let you know which shops or other special things you could take advantage of to exercise a DVC resort guest perk.

And some of these are pure-DVC perks and some just because we are resort guests and some just because we knew to do them ahead of time -- and it is hard to remember which is which, if we remember them at all.

Yes, you can find all this if you look hard enough, and they give you things to read when you get there, and if you go often enough, you will remember more and more of it.

But we only go once every 2 years, by which time even if we had remembered a perk (such as having our purchases in the Parks delivered to our rooms), it may have changed or gone to perk-heaven.

Our days there are precious, since they do come only once every other year, so that the Welcome Home packet, which tells about the latest limited-term discounts and other perks, is a LOT to absorb in the short time that we are not in the Parks actually doing what we came there to do. And we have not figured out an effective way to master it all as part of our trip planning either.

It just seems that there is a lot keep track of and so everyplace that we pay for anything, I always ask if there is a DVC and/or a resort guest discount. But I still forget a lot of the other perks (this time we finally remembered that we could do advanced priority seating at restaurants simply by picking up our room phone and pushing the "Disney information" button and following the prompts -- but that came only after we found Rain Forest Cafe at DAK to be a real zoo the day we were there and people were using their own pre-arranged priority seating that finally reminded one of us that we can do that too).

So how do others keep track of all the perks in a way that you really can use them effectively as part of your day-to-day activities?

When you plan a trip, you have a couple of choices- decide ahead of time where you want to eat and make ps before you go (especially necessary over peak times) or wing it and make them when you get there. To avoid being overwhelmed when you're there I think trip planning is essential. That's when you have time to research and find what deals are out there. First off the DVC perks are listed on the website and also in your member benefits. Find out which are applicable to your trip- ie if you golf than the golf badge is useful- likewise with discounts for minigolf, water parks, etc. The golf badge in my mind is the only real significant $ savings- it can save you 100's where as all the rest save you a few dollars. The UPH discount is not necessarily a good deal and the dining discounts are only good at a few places- so check them out and see if it's somewhere you would go to anyway- For example the Yachtsman Steakhouse is so expensive- would you eat there anyway- even with 10% off??? The perks to onsite guest are basically early entry. Making ps is no different than making a dinner reservation at home. I think it comes down to planning and if you are not a planner that's when you can have problems. WDW is so overwheming in size and activities, that you can waste a lot of time if you don't do your homework.

They give you a hand out now when you check in concerning discounts as a DVC member.

That's what troubles me - I am a good planner, but the homework needed to gain the information to do the planning is really overwhelming -- and scattered.

Thanks for the tips -- I had not realized there was a golf badge.

This last trip we got "Pocket Perks" which was a small multi folded card with all the DVC perks available. It was a great help!

Pocket Perks were mentioned on another thread. And at least two of us on that thread received "Welcome Home" packets at check-in that did not have these in it. I will certainly make sure it is there next time we check in.

Since I have not seen a Pocket Perks, I would like to know how comprehensive it is and how easy is it to find what you want when you are roaming the Parks?

DVCers should receive these whether they are staying at a DVC resort or not. I would have loved to have been able to stay at a DVC resort last week when our cruise was cancelled with only a 22hr notice. The only place DVC could get us a room for 8 consecutive nights with little notice was Port Orleans/French Quarter. I kept telling DH "there must be some reason we became DVC members". Wish I had the pocket perks then.
Thank God I had known we could pool hop. Although we couldnt stay at our home VWL we did go there one day to swim, shop, see Christmas tree decorations, etc.

All of the current DVC perks are listed on the member's website. The "pocket perks" are unique to DVC resort guests. If you are staying on points at another resort, I'm sure you can pick up a copy at any DVC resort front desk. You can also just print off the discounts from the website before even leaving.

As for planning other WDW activities, the Theme Parks and Attraction Strategies Board here on the DIS is a great place to catch some of the non-DVC activities and programs available when you'll be there.

Enjoy!

Last October I was at WDW, but not staying at a DVC resort. When we stopped at the Beach Club, I went to the front desk, introduce myself as a DVC member & asked about DVC benefits. The CM was more than willing to share info with me.

As for keeping track of Disney info, I think it is up to the individual to gather info & organize it anyway they can. I feel it is the vacationers responsibility to find out about where they are going. If I go somewhere other than Disney, then I have to reserach it myself. For example, I can check books, the Internet, etc.

I received my pocket perks and still forgot to get my 10% off my meal at the Yachtsman :( But I did remember to get it at the Cape May Buffet :)

In my bag I keep my DVC Pocket Perks, my Disney Club latest discount mailing, my Entertainment Club card and my AP ticket holder which lists the perks for AP's. :)

That's fine if you have the time. But there is a whole travel book industry now, and lots of them are specific to Disney. With the growth in the number of mobile computing devices now, I see a market for this sort of information being gathered -- and well organized for rapid correlation with my planned activities or with where I am right now in whatever part of WDW -- and delivered on a handheld PC or similar mobile device. I'd sure be an interested customer of that. And when that does arrive, I think it would be a relatively small step for Disney to have a way to put the latest perk information at your fingertips as an add-on.

Yup - Im a researcher and if I had known before 22hrs before we were to leave for a cruise which was then cancelled I would have thoroughly researched every DVC perk available. However, since I was "thrown" to this blind, a little extra help would have been appreciated.
The cruise was to be our first ever vacation using points.

Wes, if I remember correctly it covered alot. Listed restaurants that give discounts, discounts in the DD stores, golf discounts. I know I'm notorious for finding out about a discount after the fact! Now if I could just get the DVC,AP, and Disney club discounts organized in my brain!

Keep in mind that if one expects this type of information[delivered on a handheld PC or similar mobile device] from DVC (or even Disney for that matter), then the members will be paying for it. Perhaps since you see this need, you can start a small business.

I have no problem gathering information myself. I also enjoy when family & friends ask me WDW related questions because they know I have been there several times, I read bbs, I read various publications (books, Vacation Magic, my AP newsletter, etc.), I ask questions, etc.

Planning any vacation takes time - how much time one puts into the "pretrip" is up to the inidividual.
