Looking for any guidance/advice on using your vacation club membership in NYC. We are new members with banked points. As of now we don't have plans to head back to WDW and were curious about visiting New York City. We realize this is not the most efficient use of points, but we have extra to use at the moment.

So...

Has anyone done this before? Any ideas about typical availability? How was it? We are still learning the ropes of the Club and appreciate any tips or advice.

If you really do not want to use the points for going to disney world or disneyland then its a decent use for points since hotels in Manhattan can be expensive.

I have never used points there since i live an hour train ride away but there could be worse places to use your points.

We definitely have plans to visit Disney often, just not next year. Wife and I are interested In a kid free trip to NY for next year. Since this would be our first DVC trip I was just curious how difficult it might be for an outside Disney trip such as this.

If you arent planning on using your points and they are banked, I personally would rent/trade them on the rent/ trade board and then pay cash for where you want to stay. A lot of times it is cheaper to do it this way.

not a lot of timeshares in NYC, so i'm betting it would be a difficult trade to pull off.

dean and bnoble are the experts, though.

This isn't actually that bad of a trade. Here is what is available right now in Weeks. There may be a lot more in Points, but it's cumbersome to search. (You can ignore the exchange values; those don't apply to DVC.)

There is a Christmas studio still there for 2012. There was a 1BR earlier; I almost took it myself, but my wife would shoot me, as we have too many "mandatory" family events at home for the holidays.

There is also a last-minute studio checking in *this weekend*. Thanksgiving in New York anyone?

Another idea would be (although admittedly not best use of points) the Disney Cruises out of NYC next year.

Aaaaaagh, for years that was my personal "Holy Grail" of timeshare exchange. To be in the MC for the Macy's parade! Oh, I wish, I really wish I could take that ... especially through the WM portal for 4k WM credits. Aaaaaagh. (Thanks for the sighting ... it gives great encouragement that perhaps, someday, I might actually book that exchange!)

The 1BR 12/20/12 check-in is back. C'mon ... you have more than a full year to socialize the idea with your wife and family! Go for it!

Good luck with a trade. I would recommend renting your points out and paying cash for a reservation in NYC.
