DVC and Disney Cruise

Hi, we are just back from a Disney Cruise (cash, not points). We heard a rumor on board that work is in progress to make it easier/a better deal to cruise with DVC points. Anybody know anything about this??

I went on Disney Magic with points and later realized it would have been cheaper to pay cash and rent my points for $10 per point. Oh well....at least we had a great time.

I think a lot of people realize this now, and maybe that is why Disney is looking at making it less expensive to trade into DCL. THEY want to be the ones to rent your points and make some money on it.

THe DVC guy on the cruise told my husband that the DVC member cruise was one of THE highest grossing crusies DCL has ever had.

I hope this rumor is true!! We decided to pay cash for our cruise next fall. I thought the points were crazy before then I got our newest member book and looked at the increase! None of our points will be used to cruise anytime soon, at least not without the rumor coming true!

I wouldn't (couldn't) use the points to cruise, I'd have to bank and borrow, and I'm not giving up two years of vacations to do so - no cruises on points here either.

Having 6 in our family, we would have to give up almost 3 years of points!! We would have to pay for 2 of the kids as adults!!

I sure wish they gave us an option of a cabin for 6.

Given the only changes over the years have been increases, big increases, I'd think anything of a significant decrease is unlikely. I can only think of two exchange options that have EVER decreased over the years. The HAL cruise option did decrease over a few years though it has increased again. This coincided with decreases in cash prices as well. And the 1 BR II exchange did decrease though overall the II changes were more negative than positive.

The counterargument is that DVC MS is now the number one travel agent for DCL. Maybe there is some market power (though I don't know if it would make a difference). Or maybe their market research shows that DVC'ers who book using points have a superior onboard spending pattern than other guests (I know that might sound counterintuitive to some, but there actually is some logic to that possibility). In any case, we would like to see it!

I'm sure we'd all like to see some benefits but to date all I've seen of DVC from a marketing standpoint is not good. Or else they're lining someone else's pocket, certainly not ours.

So I just got out my guide book to see the difference. We have a 4 day cruise on Sept. 11. Two Category 11 rooms. DH and I in one, MIL and both DS in the other. We have to pay adult prices for one of the boys and child for the other.

I used Dreams Unlimited. Cost for cash $1950, plus I get $50 ship board credit.
Cost in points 405, plus I get to pay a $75 fee.

You want to guess which one I did? If they were to make it a better deal to use points I would, but right now it is less than double to pay cash. Plus the benefit of not having to worry if you need to cancel or change your dates.
