We have a 9 nights vacation planned in July. We would like to use the dining plan, but only for 2-3 days. Have do we get around not having it for all 9 nights. I know we have to split it, but how?

Does it matter what days you use the disney dining plan? Do you have to only use it for those 2-3 days, or can I spread it out over the 9 nights?

The dining plan for DVC follows all the rules for non-DVC cash guests through CRO, except for the requirement to purchase a park ticket through Disney. Yes, it must be for all people in the room for the entire length of the reservation. The only way around that requirement would be to make completely separate room reservations (change resorts, change room sizes or change room category) and it would require you to move from one room to another. (standard view vs. preferred view). Unless you are willing to change your room reservations, and move accordingly, the Dining Plan is all or nothing.

If you do move, the dining plan will only be for the days of that particular reservation, you can not spread 3 days of dining plan over a 9 day stay.

As Chuck said, the only way around it is to book two seperate reservations and move rooms. That way you can book the DDP for one reservation and not for the other one. Those have been the DDP rules for everyone, not just DVC, so it's a matter of if you want to comply with the rules or not use it at all.

FYI, if you have annual passes, why not get the DDE card instead? You will probably save more over the course of teh 10 days that way anyway.

Yes it matters. If you have the dining plan for three days at midnight on day three any unused credits expire you cannot 'hold' them to use over your 9 day stay.

It is by night though. So with a 3 night reservation, the dining can be spread through 4 days from checkin until midnight after checkout.

What is the DDE?

DDE is the Disney Dining Experience card. You can purchase it if you have an annual pass for $60. It is valid for a year and provides 20% off of food and beverages (including the adult variety :drinking1 ) at many of the TS restaurants.
