We are currently with Bellsouth and have DSL internet. If we were to get rid of our landline could we still get internet or do you have to have the landline to have it??

i currently dont have a landline. You have to find a service that does dry loop.
I am not in the US so i cant tell which providers use the dry loop. If you google internet with dry loop in your area. That should help.

There is no noticable difference in the speed.

It is possible to have DSL without a landline if your company offers it that way. The company I work for offers standalone DSL, but there is a $5.00 upcharge for it.

THANKS! I will call them to see if this is offered.

earthlink (i think) has a stand alone dsl we are going to swtich to them since its cheaper than our current provider.

I will check with them as well.

I looked online about Bellsouth/ATT but my state does not offer it.

Don't know if Qwest is in your area but I have DSL with them without a landline for 29.99 a month and that is with wireless also.

another term you could look under is n.a.k.ed dsl i had to spell the 1st word that way

I have no phone line DSL through AT & T...we have the basic for $14.99 a month.

We had phone service with them, but NEVER used it (we use our cells instead) so we cancelled and just have the internet service only now.

Question for the OP. How can you stand to have cell phones only?
I deal with the general public on the phone and there is nothing worse than a call from someone from home on a cell phone. Far too often the tonel quality is awful, there are drop outs, echos, low volume, I just can't see how folks put up with that at home.
Honestly, I'm not flaming you, I sincerely do not get it.

I only have a cell phone too. I have no problems with it. :confused3

We only have cell phones (and dsl through AT&T) and don't have any problems either.

It dendends. I have ATT DSL and it was cheaper for me (at the time) to have the metered phone then the upcharge for no phone service...but don't use the home phone. I'll have to check it again, because I have heard that the upcharge has changed/lowered, so it might be worth it for me to switch.

Simple answer...Economics.

We have had a 75% drop in income and we are looking at every possibility to drop any kind of bill amounts. I really do not want to do it because I really do not care for cell phones but I drive early in the morning on country roads and I need access to DH or 911 if I hit a deer or have car trouble.
We already made major cuts in services like insurance, and others a couple of years ago and dropping the landline is the next thing to go.

I do not talk on the phone much at all so we hardly use the landline anyway. I MIGHT have one conversation on the landline in a 2 week period and one on the cell phone!!

What about a pay as you go cell, and the absolute basic-basic phone service at&t offers? I understand what people are saying about they have no problems, but I understand what tvguy is saying, too. The phone customer may hear everything great while the person on the other end of the phone can't make out what you're saying (and so can't help you) because of poor satellite transmission.

I understand where TV Guy is coming from. Around here you can't have a cell phone only. Our coverage in this area stinks, and no we are far from the boonies. Everyone complains about it, you can't hear anything and you drop calls all the time. I understand how some people can, but not for me, or anyone around here, plus my darn phone looses it charge so quickly, I forget to charge it all the time. I would stick to land lines even if we did have great coverage.

I DO have a pay as you go cell phone!!I already havebasic basic service from bellsouth/att. We are experiencing a drastic cut in the amount of money coming into the household...(like a 75% cut ). My cell costs me $15 a month and the landline with internet ( the bare minimum and slowest DSL speed) is around $54.
