We're only 50/50 if our DS will be coming with us on our July trip - his AP expired in Feb so we need to get him some form of tix to link into our DME account in order to make our FP's in a couple of weeks. Since we're not 100% about him coming I WAS thinking of just buying an 8-day hopper from UTC then possibly upgrading to the gold AP at the parks later. But then I started thinking why even buy the hopper - I can still make FP's with the base tix and upgrade to a hopper later right (if we decide not to do the AP)? I am looking for the least expense possible right now... I can't believe I'm even asking this!! We usually just buy the AP's and I don't want to buy something that I can't change to what we need later.

I really hate that you have to have a valid tix linked to your account 60 days before your trip just to make FP's. He may not be able to go so then we've spent a lot of money possibly for no reason. :headache:

Should everyone with a computer be allowed to make FP+ reservations without any skin in the game? You’ll have spend that money for a very good reason; to make those FP+ reservations. If that’s not a good enough reason, then just tell your son he has to wing it.

As for tickets, you can upgrade a base ticket to a hopper on site if/when you need to. Personally, I look for the ticket that saves the most money. You get the discount when you buy the ticket from UT, so you might as well get the most out of it.

Buying a base ticket to make the fast passes seems to make the most sense. The ticket won’t expire if not used, correct?
I feel your pain-once they’re in college summer plans are hard to pin down. I’d be reluctant to upgrade to an AP because next summer could be uncertain as well.

I think they have to be used by the end of Dec 2019. The reason we would upgrade would be in case we decide to go next March over his spring break and again next summer. Indeed plans for him that far ahead are sketchy but we are hoping he could at least join us for long weekends or something...

OK, let me rephrase. I miss the old legacy FP system where I didn't have to pre-buy an expensive tix "just in case" one member of our family couldn't make it. I don't like having to shell out over $400 that may or may not be used. It's another Disney money grab in my book. I'm sure there are plenty of people who have to buy tix that are never even used...

Buy the base ticket - it's all you need to make the FP's. If something comes up and he's having a hard time making it to WDW you can reassign the ticket and someone else can use it to upgrade. And while they do expire now they don't lose the gate value they had at that time. So it could remain with him and if he came after Dec 2018 he'd receive credit for that amount towards the purchase of a new ticket.

I liked the old less planning days too.

Buy the ticket and assign it to him. If he can't go you can reassign it to you or someone else later on. I've got three tickets assigned to me and three to Bill in our MDE account right now.

From the ticketing website "Multi-day tickets are valid for one theme park per day for each day of the ticket. The first use must be on or before December 31, 2019."

I guess it is to keep people from buying tickets and keeping them for years for later use. Also, that way, they can write it off of their books rather than having to keep it active in their system for eternity.

It's a nice way that they can get more from people after a certain point in time if they don't use the ticket by the "expiration" date. They still will give you credit for the price you paid so they can't just write it off to breakag but if they carry it they will get more if it is ever traded in. And.....I'm sure some people will just look at the expiration date and figure Its just gone and buy a whole other ticket.

I hate all the ticketing rules / FP crap, too.

The problem is it's nearly impossible to use up any "extra" tickets you may have accumulated....

I have a bunch of 1 day tix in MDE that I have no idea when I'll ever be able to use. Thankfully they are old enough that they don't "expire". We bought DVC AP vouchers (recent deal) but couldn't use the 1 day tix toward the purchase because it wasn't in person. That's going to be a continual problem because I am most likely never going to be buying tix in person since you need them ahead of time to book FP.

Ugh.

For our upcoming trip, my Ds boyfriend is planning on coming with us. I do not have any ticket / AP for him yet. I considered transferring all our 1 day tickets to him (to book FP) and then upgrading only ONE of them when we get there to whatever ticket we decide to buy for him. Will the FP's be valid if we do that? (Since he won't be in the park on the ticket attached to most of the FPs?)

My D was just in Disney on a school trip. They had not pre-booked FPs and she said it sucked. She was in the park for 3-4 hours at a time with her group and they would ride 2 rides and eat a meal. That's it.

The FP will be valid. FP are NOT tired to a particular ticket. They are associated with a particular person and MDE account. A ticket of some type is required to make a FP, but there's no actual link between the two. He can enter the park with any other ticket he has and use the FPs made previously.
