Dumb question-what do the wands "do"?

Here's a picture of the wand box from our wand:

It is Fleur delacour's wand. The box isn't the nicest inside and the outside is just a plain box.

The only wands that say Ollivander's on the outside are the birthday wands.

Both DS(11) and DD (8) got wands from the stand outside of Hogwarts, we have a "He who should not be named" and a Hermanie wand and they have spent hours casting spells at each other, the dog, even the neighbours from behind the curtains.

That was last October 2010 and they are still using them now. Enjoy!
