Dumb question on renting points?

We have never rented points before and actually just heard about it. I just want to make sure I am figuring this out right. It seems like renting points runs $10 to $13 average. We are flexible and we thinking Jan. or Feb. Standard Studio at BWV staying Sun. to Thurs. I go to the point chart and see that it is 9 points times five nights or 45 points. I come up with less that $600 for five nights and that does not seem right. Can somebody straighten me out.
TIA

That's the right approach as long as your inputs from the charts are correct, you've got it. It can be a significant savings over the rack rate.

that is correct. however, be aware that those cheaper standard view rooms are popular among BWV owners and sell out quickly (i.e. often 10-11 months in advance). if you want one, you will need to find a BWV owner very early in order to make the reservation (although the preferred view rooms are still a pretty good deal.)

[thread=1669863]also, since you are new, here is a thread with essential info about renting.[/thread]

With renting a reservation from a DVC member comes a few things to consider. You have no control over the reservation until the moment you check in. You cannot call Member Services for any reason - they will not talk to you. You cannot confirm the reservation with MS, only the member. You cannot add Magical Express or the dining plan - the member has to do that for you. You can't modify or change the reservation. The member has to allow that and many won't. The member sets the payment agreement 0s some don't take Paypal. Some only accept full payment once the reservation is made. Think of it as a final transaction. You bought it, it's yours, except you have no control over it.

Otherwise....renting points are a great value! You simply can not get those rates paying Disney direct. I've rented a couple of times successfully and had no issues with the member owning/controlling the reservation. I knew exactly what I wanted (or I was super flexible with resorts) and my dates were typically firm. I looked around and charted my course. It makes the process much simpler for both renter and rentee. I haven't paid over $11 pp. The only difference really noteworthy is there is no daily housekeeping. I can totally live without daily housekeeping and towel change outs. I don't have a live in housekeeper at home and I can throw a load of clothes in the wash. If you must have it, you can choose to pay a fee to have it done. Advance notice is required.

I would have to say that most of the time renting points on these boards are successful. If there were issues you'd hear about it. Not saying someone ocassionally gets burned, but I feel "confident" renting here. I would definitely read up on how to verify a member's ownership.

that seems right! i rent points also, i got a BWV studio with the boardwalk view this past thanksgiving for 672.00 for the week. i am also renting again for Feb. again a BWV studio, boardwalk view for 770.00...we LOVE it! i actually was able to get someone to rent points for Feb. for my sister 2 weeks ago, they still had boardwalk view available, i rent mine 11 months before to make sure i get what i want. good luck!

Its quite a bargin, but there are a few things to keep in mind.

DVC cancellation policies are very different than Disney hotel cancellation policies. The member you rent from may treat your transaction as final the moment you book it (they may not, there is a lot of variation). The thing to keep in mind is that sometimes they can't help you if you need to cancel, even if they want to.

DVC rentals come with limited maidservice - this is a timeshare not a hotel reservation.

DVC rooms are a little different than Disney hotel rooms - the Boardwalk studio will have a queen bed and a full (?) sized pull out sofa bed - not the two queens you'd get over in the Inn.

Your agreement is with a private party - it will take trust. The vast majority of renters have glitch free transactions - but occationally people are defrauded in the transaction. There is also the risk that the owner you work with won't be too knowledgeable about rentals - what happens in those cases is you get a member saying "standard view, no problem" - when their aren't any available - and sending money to someone only to have to make different choices.

(Your chances of a Standard View Sun-Thurs at this point are very slim - they are 20% of the resort and tend to book quickly - its possible you will get lucky, but I'd have SEVERAL backup choices lined up to make working with a member easier - would Boardwalk preferred view do? Do you like the low points and want OKW? Give the member options to work with.)
