Dumb question about kitchen appliances

I've got a really stupid question...brace yourselves.

We're looking at a house with brand new appliances included. The oven has a range hood thing over it. I'd prefer a over-the-range microwave. If the range has a hood thing does that mean it cannot be removed and a microwave could not be put there?

no, I think you could put a microwave there. We used to have a range hood thingy and when we renovated the kitchen we had the contractor replace the hood with an over the range microwave.

Is the range/oven gas? If so, the microwave "vent" does not have enough power to really vent the heat that would be coming from the cooktop.

We just replaced our range hood with a microwave. The two issues that popped up while doing it were that 1) the existing cabintes were too low to fit the microwave safely over the stove top( there is a minimum clearance needed), so we had to dismantle the cabinet and move them up several inches, this also meant we had to redo the moulding at the top. It wasn't hard, but it wasn't a quick project. Then 2) the range hood plugged into a socket that was wired to the kitchen, because it didn't pull much energey. The microwave needs its own circuit so we had to rewire that plug (we had an electrician do that.)

Thank you. The oven is electric. I hadn't thought about the cabinets being too low. There's a pretty good space between the range hood and the stove top. My dad used to be an electrician, so he could help with that.

I had the opposite problem 2 houses ago. We took the vent off and installed a microwave.

Bleepin' thing was so high up I had to use to stepstool to use the microwave!

You should let him know, if you want a microwave over your cooktop. Wonder why he doesn't know that.

Not true. We have a gas cooktop with a microwave over it.

we have an electric cooktop, but MIL has a gas cooktop and a microwave over it too. Not sure why your builder would say it can't be done unless it's code in your area to not have a micro over the gas cooktop. I'd look into it further if you really want one
