It has only taken 10 years to convince my Dh to take me ( oh and the 3 kids:lmao:) to Disney  I know I know how did i ever survive :)

I started planning about 6 months ago after DH promised that we would go to Disney come he11 or high water. My planning quickly became an obsession, resulting in a slow torture to my poor husband who doesn't  Disney as much as I do.

Of course he11 and high water did come :sad1:. It seemed like some force was out to ruin my Disney dream. In Sept shortly after we decided to go to Disney we got some very tragic news. Our very happy safe secure little bubble was shattered and we saw what real evil lurks in today's world. I absorbed myself in Disney even more, telling myself it was the light at the end of the tunnel. I used my planning to hide from everything we were going through, it was my therapist and my escape. It gave me something else to think about. I knew Disney was going to be our healing springs. So i kept on planning.
I was originally planning to do the big 3 in Orlando, Disney, Universal and Seaworld, in a 7-day vacation. Then I realized that was why too much to do in such a short time. After a lot of convincing Universal was cut from the plans. The 2 younger kids would not be able to ride half the rides anyway because of their height and I would not be able to ride because someone would have to stay with them. What was the point in paying $70.00 bucks per person when 1/2 of us wouldn’t be able to ride ½ the rides anyway.
Then I had to convinced DH and the kids that we should cut Seaworld as well. I told them we could spend 3 more days in Disney or 1 day at Seaworld, so it was decided that we would immerse ourselves in Disney 100%!
After figuring out what parks we would visit (and not visit) it was time to plan when we were going. My sister told me about a site that had the best times to visit and the worst times to visit. My first choice was during the first week of June right after school let out but that seemed way to far away and June is HOT! So then Spring break looked good but EVERYONE goes during spring break plus the park closed early on both my weekends for Grad nights. I finally settled on February 2008, Mardi Gras Vacation for the kids and a cooler & less crowded time.
After figuring out where we were going and when we were going it was time to decided on accommodations. That shouldn’t be to hard right? There are hotels everywhere in Orlando, hotels in every price range and quality. Well Hotel planning became my biggest nemesis. I wanted a room for 5 with kitchen facilities and maybe even a private bedroom for the adults. But our one income household was on a tight budget. So I searched rental homes and all suite hotels. I read review after review. As soon as I found a house or hotel we could afford that seemed clean and respectable I would read about a mugging in the parking lot or deadly mold growing in the air condition vents. I worried and obsessed over where to stay. I booked a rental home and signed up for the Feb 08 code watch and waited praying Disney would release a code that would make staying onsite more accessable to our limited budget. I had signed up for the Disney Visa card and when the discount came out stay onsite for about $300 more then what I would have paid for off site i booked it! I immediately felt safer and more relaxed about my choice to stay on Disney Property. I no longer had nightmares of being mugged returning to our room after a fun day in Magic Kingdom.
So by late October our plans were finalized. We were going to Disney for 7 days 6 nights in February 2008, during our Mardi Gras Holiday. And we would be staying at Port Orleans Riverside with the Disney Dining plan.

Then in November I got call that would turn our lives upside down yet again. My sister was going through her own he11 and needed me. We have never been close but when your only sister calls, you drop everything and run to help . Her 3 kids came to live with us and she followed shortly after. We have lived with 3 adults and 6 kids in a 4 bedroom home for the last 4 months. Two family's struggling with two different tragedies under the same roof. I honestly wasnt sure if we would all survive until Disney.
My sister had been planning her own Disney vacation as well (before she came to live with us) so she switched her plans from April to Feburary. We would all be going together, we are still not sure how good an idea that will turn out being but we really had very little choice.

In 2 days we will be in Disney and the magic bubble of happiness, forgetting all that has happened in the last year...at least for a little while.

I had not really planned to do a trip report but i figured it would be a great way to relive the magic after it was over. This is going to be a report from a first timers point of view. I hope you all enjoy it.

Next up Cast of Characters and our tour plans.

Since this is my trip report I will be focusing on my family. My sister who is also a member of Dis may do her own I dont know. If we meet up for parts, I will introduce them as they come into play.

This is all of ours first trips ever!:cool1:

The Cast:
DH = :smickey: 42 isnt really that excited about Disney, Thinks of vacations as a time to relax at home not running around theme parks. But loves his wife and kids and will suffer through becuase we want to go. Very much a mans man and is not at all happy that his wife has him dining with Cinderella on Super Bowl Sunday LOL

ME:earsgirl: 30 :scared1: (when did that sneak up on me?) Completely hooked on Disney now. a mild tempered redhead. Stay at home mom.

DD 13 :tinker: Lots of teen attitude but a great girl...Loves Japan and China and plans to spend every dime she has in those countries. She is is also my home school test project before i venture into home schooling all 3 next year.

DD 8 :princess: Daddy's princess through and through. In his eyes she can do no wrong. She is almost too sweet though.

DS 5 :tigger: Lots of energy, likes Pooh Tigger and friends. He is the love of my life :) I wanted a boy and finally got the little rascal he was well worth the wait.

I spent quite a bit of time on the Dis signs boards and made shirts for 4 of our park days, Epcot passport books, and autograph books. I originally made the shirts so i could keep track of each other in the park but then the bug took over. Dh said he couldnt handle matching EVERY DAY!! so I stopped at 4 matching shirts. Here is a list of our planned park days and the shirt designs i am using for each day.

How exciting, your first trip!!
I went on my first disney vacation 3 years ago and it was so much more than I had expected. You're going to have a great time. Maybe your dh will fall in love with it too!

'Ello All! I am avic's big sister. I'll interject where she gets stuff wrong....like "mild tempered redhead". That's an oxymoron. No such thing. Unfortunately for me, we won't be touring 100% together 100% of the time. Which leaves me to solo parent it with DS8, DD7 and DS6. I'm pretty sure I am certifiably insane.

Welcome sisters.

I look forward to reading your dual trip report.

Call a time out from each other, instead of holding an argument or being upset with each other. I'm sure you two get along, but even the best laid plans can go awireyy. Have a great vacation. WDW is a huge place. Make sure you take a day of rest, even if it is just an afternoon.

Ok ok maybe I'm not really that MILD tempered :lmao:
Welcome Sis..thats a good idea you chime in as well maybe we should rename this trip report the "dueling banjos a trip report by two sisters" :lmao: :rotfl:
My sister and I are polar opposits. I am very organized and an extreme planner even down to what day i wash the socks. My sister is a procrastinator. She waits till the last minute for everything. So the last 4 months of planning our vacations has been interesting. I planned iteneraries, made ADR's, made shirts, and my sister surfed the net reading this and that. Then asked if I could make her shirts . No big deal since i had all my stuff done.

I had my bags packed 2 weeks ago forcing the kids to live in school uniforms and play clothes  My sister was still shopping for clothes and picking things up from her previous home as needed...I wonder if she ever got the kid's their new shoes from her old house :confused3 . You must also understand my sister is an RN so she has all of 2 days a week off and works 12 hour shifts at the hospital. So in the last 2 weeks she had 4 days off to get oil changes, pack clothes, meet with her travel agent etc. I forced her to sit down one day and we layed out all their clothes matching outfits and packing suitcases. I felt much better knowing she was all packed as well :cool2:.
Now like I said had the kids packed 2 weeks ago ;) and had mine and Dh's almost packed but then DH informs me he will be traveling for work the 2 weeks prior to our vacation coming home the afternoon before we leave  WHAT??? I cant pack everything if you have it in a suitcase 500 miles away! So i set to figureing out how to pack DH in advance and still have him in clothes for his business trip. Socks and undies were bought...you can never have to many right :rolleyes1 and i packed Dh's shirts and all his jeans except one pair. He would have to live in work clothes... sorry buddy.
I spent this last week cleaning house (it has to be clean before we leave!) getting the car tuned up and counting down....
So the bags are packed. Everything is gathered in the living room waiting for tonight when it will be stacked and crammed into the back of my grape colored minivan and tomorrow we will make the eight hour drive to DISNEY:cool1:!

Now i know i have not yet mentioned the children of my story much. They didnt really get into the planning part. They watched the video a few times and they are all excited but they think mom has gone over the deep end :scared:. I made me, err THEM, a count down chart and everynight I have one of the kiddos pull a number off and I do the "going to Disney dance" ... They look at me like I have lost my ever loving mind! Hey dont they know this vacation is all for me, err THEM!!! :lmao:

Next time you hear from me I will be back from the happy place :sad1: with lots of pictures and stories to share :goodvibes. Hope everyone has a wonderful week.. I know i will

How exciting! Only 1 day!!!

I can definitely understand what you're going through! My first visit to the world was 4 years ago, when my 5 year old was just a little guy. My mother, husband and I agreed to go again when he was old enough to remember. My family had a tough year last year losing several family members and somehow DisneyWorld became my happy place. We visited DisneyWorld last summer with my brother and his family (4 kids)--again an adventure, but a total magical blast!:wizard:

Already this year we have lost a nephew...and we though 2007 was bad. We had already been planning a spring break trip with my in-laws, so once again, the World will be my :dance3: happy place. I'm so looking forward to Its a Small World and a Dole Whip---talk about a comfort zone!

I'm subscribing!! :yay:

Welcome Sis..thats a good idea you chime in as well maybe we should rename this trip report the "dueling banjos a trip report by two sisters" :lmao: :rotfl:

You should really rename this trip :rotfl:

I can't wait to hear how this trip goes:laughing: Hope you have a Blast and I will be looking for you guys Saturday and Sunday!!

We're back, and for the most part our respective trips went pretty well. Our paths didn't cross a whole lot, but we were occasionally together. I didn't kill any of my kids, although I wanted to a couple times.

Yes we are back and had wonderful trips. There were a few tears, a few fights, and even a couple dream team moments!
I will start working on my trip report tomorrow but i wanted to post a few observations first.
#1 Feb 2-9th was reported as a "slow season" by many of the Disney planning sites... It was far from slow. While i dont think it was max crowds it still was not light at all. Our first full day in the park (Sunday Feb 3rd) was 60 min waits for nearly everything in MK. It was the busiest day and after speaking to CM's we were told it was unusually busy for the time of year.
#2 DDP is a total waste of money for my family. We couldnt eat nearly what they gave us and felt overwhelmed with the TS everyday. We started splitting counter services after 2 days and on the last day gave my sister 2 counter services and still had one we didnt use. We spent all our snacks on the last days as well... with the changes i dont think saving snack credits for taking home are worth it... Spend them on Ice cream in the parks.
#3 Buses were sort of crowded we had seats 50% of the time and stood the other 50%. Dh said he actually enjoyed not having to drive so i guess the standing room only 50% of the time was worth it.
#4 Port Orleans Riverside was very nice but i think we will rent a house next time. Im a light sleeper and heard the toilets from either side and above us flushing, i heard everyones showwers as well, and of course the people above us walking... The pool the one night we went to it was bust ( thanks to POFQ's pool being closed) and the hot tub was packed... WITH KIDS! That annoyed me becuase every where I have ever went Hot Tubs had a no one under 16 rule.
#5 Weather was really warm (low to mid 80's) except the last day and it was comfortable that day. One day we had a bit of rain but only off and on for about 45 mins and it was very light (we ate lunch during that time).

Thats all i can think of right now. Coming soon Day 1 arriving at POR and the Pirate and Princess Party...

Feb 2nd: The drive, the arrive, and a Party!
We packed the mini van Friday night and got everyone to bed early in hopes of getting as much sleep as possible before the big day! I set the clock for 4am and before my head hit the pillow it seemed like it was time to get up and get moving. I got dressed and woke up DH before heading down the hall to wake up the kids. I fully expected everyone to grumble and complain since it was so early but even 5 yr old DS jumped out of bed wide eyed and bushy tailed with an exclamation of “ We’re going to the Ep “pah” Cot Ball! He says this really fast with a slight lisp and I find it so endearingly cute. I have no idea why this child is so excited about Epcot…isn’t the Magic Kingdom more geared to his age or even Animal Kingdom?
With a few last minute luggage additions to the minivan we were loaded up and on our way with my sister and her kids following us in her car. It wasn’t 30 mins before DS asked are we at the “Eppacot” ball yet? And DD13 kept claiming she was hungry! We made good time even with a total of 6 kids between my sister and myself. At our lunch stop we had a bit of misfortune when my Dsis left her camera batteries charging while we ate and it ran her battery in her car down.

The directions I printed off MapQuest took us in the back enterance so we did even see the “Welcome to Disney World” archway! That upset me because I had dreamed of driving under that archway but it was probably better coming in the back and avoiding the main road traffic. We lost an hour because of the time change and arrived at POR at about 3pm. The first impression of the resort was a welcome quite retreat type feeling. The lobby was elegant in an understated way, nothing over the top and flashy just pure simple southern elegance. There was a small line of about 6 to 8 people/ reservations ahead of us. Dh gathered the kids and took them to sit and watch the TV set up for just that purpose while Dsis and I got in line to check in. We only waited about 5 mins before I was called and Dsis was called up within a minute after I was. I made my way over to the attendent and pulled out my reservation confimation voucher. For a split second my heart skipped a beat as I worried if my reservation would be “lost”! Dh walked up just about this time, having left DD 13 in charge of the smaller kids at the TV. DH chatted with the attendent about football, discovering that he had worked with some professional team before entering semi-retirment and coming to work for Disney. Throughout our chat he checked us in asked question explained the dining plan and gave us buttons for first Time Visitors, Grand Gathering, and celebrating an Anniversary. My sister got finished long before I did ( I guess she wasn’t as chatty with her attendent as I was with mine). She had not gotten her first timer pins so my attendent gave her a set too and then gave us directions to our room. We scored the very sought after building 14 ground floor, close to the parking a lot but not right on it and just a minute from the food court pool and bus stop!
We headed back to the minivan and drove around to our room. The room was very clean with a cozy homey-type feeling to it, again nothing fancy or flashy just comfortable and clean. Dh started unloading the car while I tired to figure out where to put everything. I though the room needed a little more space for a family of five. After getting all our bags inside it was pretty cramped. But I quickly organized everything as best I could and it was acceptable. I guess if we had unpacked the suitcases and put everything in drawers there would have been more room but we never thought about that!
Once everything was organized we all got showers and got dressed for the big event… Mickey’s Pirate and Princess Party! I was excited to kick off the vacation with a special event. Dh and I even dressed up as Pirates Ds was Captain Jack DD8 was Cinderella ( but she wore a sleeping beauty crown) and DD13 was Tinkerbell. Once we were all dressed we headed to the bus stop for our first experience with Disney transportation. The bus came around pretty quickly and we had seats to sit in so I was happy with that.
We arrived at Magic Kingdom about 530 or 6. I’m not sure exactly I was too excited. We got our wrist bands, treasure maps and little black bags for our Pirate booty and headed into the park. DD 13 stopped to look at someone’s pins and got seperarted from us which ended up starting our first moments in the park off on the wrong foot. DH was mad because she knows better and she cried and pouted for a couple minutes. We entered and came around to the view of the castle and as I pointed it out to DD8 her whole face lit up! We spotted Snow White off to our left and we went to meet her and get some pictures made. She was very sweet and as we were there with her Dopey came out. Ds% did not like Dopey and would not let him sign his book. After snow white we made our way up main street stopping for a photopass picture in front of the castle. We left like it was more crowded then we had anticipated but the parks regular day guests had not left yet. We turned and made our way to adventure land were we rode Alladin’s Carpets and then got in line to ride the Jungle Cruise. There was a bit of a line at this one, I am guessing maybe 15-20 minutes. DS5 promptly fell asleep and slept the rest of the night! He later claimed the boat mad him sea sick LOL. Ds sleeping really bummed me out and I didn’t want to ride a lot of stuff since DH and DS wouldn’t be able to. So we stopped and got some dinner at Peco Bill’s, which was pretty good but way more then we were able to eat. After that we decide to just wander around looking for treasure spots. We rode the Teacups, Goofy’s Brainstormer and It’s a Small World but didn’t want to ride too many rides without DH and sleeping DS. We got pictures done in front of the stage couch and watched the parade but for the most part we just enjoyed to atmosphere. I wish DS had not conked out on us because we could have gotten a lot of rides done L
We discovered DS was running a fever so we left the park at about 10:30 or 11 and headed back to POR for some much needed sleep.

Will DS feel better for our first full day in WDW? Will we meet the Dream Team? Plus what happens when you park your stroller in the wrong place!
