Duck poop in pools- What's up with that?

There were lots of ducks in the quiet pool at the Poly last summer. I didn't see any duck poop but there were lots of feathers in the water. I hate birds and wasn't happy to see my kids come out of the water with feathers on them. I never saw any ducks in the main pool but that was probably because there was lots of people in it all the time.

I'm not so sure about leaving all of your trust in WDW. My family was at the MN Zoo 4 years ago and we all became very ill days later, along with several other families. A couple weeks later it was determined that we had been infected with the Cryptospiridium parasite which they decided happened from one or a few sick birds leaving their fecal matter at a large water spraying fountain that kids would run through on hot days. Many people sued (not us-I'm sure it was not intentional on the zoo's part) and the fountains are now gated off and for looks only! I'm not saying people shouldn't swim in the resort pools, we love them but hopefully someone from WDW might see this and try in the future to keep the ducks, etc further from the pools. I for one can't tell a sick one from a healthy one!!!

My parents told me that at one time, Disney did try to get rid of them and they didn't use very environmentally friendly tactics, so they had to stop.....

The ducks in the pool aren't the result of people feeding them, they're just THERE.....

and I love swimming in lakes (not so much the ocean haha) so maybe that's why I don't care as much......

I can think of a whole lot worse things than ducks swimming in the swimming pools! Growing up swimming in the Atlantic Ocean, no one ever thought about it, and there certainly is no anti microbial solution in fresh water lakes or ocean water, so chlorinated pools are much safer, by far. BTW, if Disney wasn't worried about microbial infections, etc, they certainly wouldn't have closed River Country to the public for aforesaid reasons!

What grosses me out a LOT more than the idea of ducks in the pool (at least the ducks are pretty natural) are all those poor kids running through the water fountains at DTD, the fountains that spray up from the ground sporadically. We habitually see kids just lolling on the concrete ground, rubbing their entire bodies & faces on all of this foot water spewing up around and onto them - gross!!! I've even seen them drink the water, which is really disgusting; I'm surprised there aren't more outbreaks of disease from these foot fountains.

Saw ducks swimming in the quiet pool at Poly, but no doo! I agree; I think the chlorine kills most of the germs from them. Also, while staying at PO-Riverside, pool was closed one afternoon due (no pun intended!) to someone having diareha (sorry sp/graphic!) in the pool! Needless to say, my kids didn't go in that pool the rest of the vacation!

And that is VERY truthful.
DH was running one early morning around the POR complex when he hit hard on his right shoulder from behind, right after reading the "birds in this area may be aggressive" warning sign. Sure enough a bird hit into him.
It was sore, but probably stunned him as much as anything. He can only guessing because he was moving fast (well faster than a vacationer walking ) that the bird was more threatened and actually hit him.
Occasionally the birds swooped very close to our heads as we were walking on the path by the pool area.

I have to agree... those fountains are some of my DD's favorites! The water is chlorinated, by the way. Boy, do we have TOO much time on our hands, or what?

I don't know why people feed the birds, not only will they poop in the pools but when they get into a feeding frenzies they poop on people around them. YUCK!

But then again my mother always says that when a bird poops on you it is good luck.

I think letting ducks in a pool is just gross! I have an inground pool and live on a lake and i had trouble with ducks flying in and swimming but I put a fake owl out that scares them and keeps they away . maybe disney should try that!

And just HOW is Disney supposed to keep the birds out of the pools? Or stop them from flying? There are already a ton of fake animals at Disney--I don't think a plastic owl is going to do the trick.

Maybe that's the problem. We've all become so used to the fake animals that we forget how the real ones are SUPPOSED to behave.

The Disney ducks are just doing what real ducks do.

It's nature, folks. Nothing to be done about it.

This thread has made laugh quite a bit. I thought it was cute to see the ducks taking their monring swim in the pool. If you're that afraid of germs then don't go swimming in that pool. I'd worry more about the amount of urine from people(adults as well as kids) than I would about a duck swimming in it.Lets not forget the one who don't bathe and go swimming either. Ick!

I read a recent study that implied that our "anti-bacterial world" is not such a great place to live...... The companies who sell cleaning supplies, soaps and such are spending a fortune selling us on the idea that germ free is the way to be. It seems like they are (based on this study) not really doing us any favors. More people than ever are becoming ill from bacterial exposure. Small amounts of exposure to bacteria work much like a vaccine, upping our immunity.

That said.... there is no way I am giving up my anti-bacterial Dawn dishwashing detergent.

On more than one occasion, during our stays at the WL, they have made everyone get out of the pool, because it was contaminated, human feces was floating around. I also bet if you knew how much human urine is in the pool water you would be shocked. I guess the chemicals they put in the water kills much of the bacteria.

When I'm on vacation I like there to be a pool right next to those resort buildings, a clean pool. And I'd like it to look like a pool too, not a pond!
When I was at GF last year, the pool was being used by some of WDW's critters, now why can't they just stick to their own turf and use the lakes? I reckon' they should have some duck-police roaming about.

You guys have officially grossed me out!!!! And I won't even go into what I saw at the main pool at All Star Sports in June! I guess when we start our stay at BCV on Sunday I have to tell my daughter to watch out for the small Baby Ruth Bars too!!!
