Does anyone have any recommendations?

We're flying AirTran out of the small terminal, so the Westin doesn't have any particular advantage for us, and since we're leaving on a Thursday, the rates are outrageous! I've been paging through other websites and reading reviews, and it doesn't seem like any of the airport hotels generate much in the way of positive opinions. We're hoping to find something with a pool (limiting, I know, but it'll mean leaving right after school and having a ready-made way to wear the kids out so they'll get over the pre-Disney excitement and actually sleep!).

So far, it looks like the options are the Best Western, Four Points by Sheraton, or spending considerably more than I'd like to (Marriott, Courtyard, Crowne Plaza, etc). Has anyone stayed at either of these? Have anywhere else to recomend?

A couple of years ago, we stayed at the Best Western pre-flight. I would not recommend it.

My husband and I took a Saturday afternoon trip to DTW that year and did a recon of the hotels available. (I also posted a lengthy summary on this board thereafter.) We thought, for the money, it would be a good option. We should have actually visited a room. The rooms were not in very good shape and we were moved several times to find a room which was unoccupied (yes, they gave us keys to an occupied room) and functional (water pipe to the sink fractured and spewed water all over our luggage). I admit the pool area was fine, but that is about it. :scared1:

The Four Points Sheraton was also nice and we wished we had booked our stay there.

We have stayed at the Courtyard by Marriott (twice) and it was nice as well. The Crowne was also a good option, although a bit pricier than the Sheraton.

The Clarion was really nasty although the lobby was fine.

Another great place to stay was the Hilton Garden Inn--not too high in price, parking on site available for a minimal fee and the rooms, pool area, and common areas were well maintained.

All of the hotels offered free shuttle service and/or park & fly options.

Here's a copy from my MS Word file of the post I created--the prices would no longer be accurate, since this was two years ago, but we were in the area last summer and the property reviews are accurate. . .

* = Previously stayed

Best Western International Gateway*, park & fly package includes one night accommodations and seven nights free parking at Airlines parking; 734-728-2800; $97 p/night + tax. The property is somewhat older in appearance, but clean. The rooms are small, yet well maintained. It is a larger property with indoor “courtyard or holidome” type area central to the rooms. The courtyard area includes a fitness area, pool, spa, sauna, tanning bed room, video games, and pool—ample seating in the area for relaxation. There is a lounge that opens at 5:00 p.m., banquet facilities, a restaurant that appeared to serve a buffet-type breakfast (perhaps dinner, unsure because there was no obvious information). For a single night before flight it appears adequate with lots of outdoor space (including a covered pavilion, poolside) to relax if the weather is nice. A bit tired, but the staff was friendly and helpful.

Doubletree Hotel (NO LONGER CALLED DOUBLETREE--can't recall it's name, but across from Best Western), park & fly package includes one-night accommodations and eight nights parking at parking lot across the street; 734-467-8000; $159 p/night + tax. Sumptuous surroundings and bedding in a nice sized room. The pool area was comfortable and well maintained although the sauna was not operational when we visited. The pool is an indoor/outdoor pool that allows for sunbathing outside weather permitting. The hotel obviously caters to a seminar/convention crowd and is quite sprawling. There was a nice internet area just off the lobby as well as a restaurant and lounge. Adjacent to the lounge there is a room containing a very nice pool table. Very attractive property and the beds looked great!

Four Points Sheraton, park & fly package includes one night accommodations and eight nights parking at Qwik Park, $109 p/night + tax; 734-729-9000. The Sheraton was undergoing a major renovation of all rooms and common areas—new carpeting, wallpaper, drapes, spreads, etc. We were not able to see an actual room, but did get to see a mock-up of the new interiors—quite attractive. The pool area was on the small side and looked a bit worn. The spa was large and there was a smallish outdoor, fenced area for sunbathing or relaxing. The fitness room had many apparatus and appeared well maintained. The lounge area was quite nice with a tropical type theme and there appeared to be a restaurant of sorts—unsure if it serves anything more than breakfast.

Hilton Garden Inn*, park & fly package includes one night accommodations with 10 days parking (onsite or across the street at a public parking lot), $149 p/night + tax; 734-727-6000. Very nice, tasteful hotel with wonderful complimentary cookies. The rooms are of average size with full-size beds. They were comfortable when we were there and everything was clean. The pool area was nice and had access to a lovely patio area for plane watching or relaxing. The fitness center had basic equipment, but seemed to be attended to with regularity. The lounge is located just off the lobby and just adjacent to the lounge is a “cafeteria-style” restaurant. It seemed that you chose a menu item, placed and order, and it was cooked as you waited. Not clear on the operation of the restaurant although it was serving dinner items when we were there in 2005.

Hampton Inn, park & fly package includes one night accommodations with seven nights parking at Airlines Parking, $125 p/night + tax; 734-721-1100. This is a basic Hampton Inn with an outdoor pool and the usual breakfast service in the a.m. The rooms are clean and standard sized. Very basic hotel and for the price, I’d stay elsewhere.

Crowne Plaza, park & fly package includes one night accommodations with seven nights parking; $142 p/night + tax; 734-729-2600. This property is a “can’t miss” on Merriman. It is a tall triangular shaped building with a glass front and sits on a corner lot. The staff was a bit on the unfriendly side, although we were given access to a room. The room was nice with great bedding (same as Doubletree). The room we viewed had a balcony overlooking the expansive atrium and was a nice feature although there is no seating on the balcony so it is a bit of a waste. The atrium is lovely with many seating areas for quiet time and a pool area/fitness center off to the side. The pool is rather small, but seemed well maintained. There is a nice lounge and an Italian themed restaurant just next to it. The Crowne is a nice hotel that appears to cater to the business traveler although accommodating to families as well. There is a large conference area on the third floor and a huge screen TV in the atrium with comfortable furniture and tables for relaxing.

Courtyard by Marriott*, park & fly package includes one night accommodations with eight days parking across the street at Airlines Parking; $179 p/night + tax; (Marriott 800 # for res). The Courtyard definitely caters to the business traveler although we were comfortable there. The courtyard area was quite nice with gazebos, tables, chairs, loungers, etc. The pool is indoors and on the small side, but very nice. There is a fitness room as well. The restaurant is strictly a breakfast type and there is no “lounge” per se. There are self-serve coolers near the check-in desk, which offer sodas and adult beverages for sale.

Marriott Airport, park & fly package includes one night accommodations and seven days parking; $209 p/night + tax; Marriott 800# for res). This is the upscale Marriott in the area and sits just next to the Courtyard. It is quite lovely and has an indoor and outdoor pool. For the additional $$$--not my cup of tea.

Ramada Inn f/k/a Fairfield Inn*, unsure of the park & fly price at this date; billboard advertises $59 and up p/night. We stayed here when it was a Fairfield and the rooms were adequate. The drawback was the pool is an outdoor “thermal”. While it was quite warm, it was not comfortable because it was too early in June to swim in Detroit although our kids did it.

Northwest Inn, next to Best Western and across from Sheraton, we did not even look at this property because you could transfer the name to “Northworst” and you would have a clear picture of it. The motel is a box with tiny windows and no landscaping on the exterior. Looks can be deceiving, I know, but I did not even want to look at the interior.

Wow! Thank you for all the input!

Something about the Best Western made me reluctant to book, just a got feeling I guess. The more reviews I read, the more happy I am that I hesitated!!

I'm glad to hear the Four Points looks nice. I really didn't want to spend more than $150, which narrowed it down to the Best Western, which we ruled out because of many negative reviews on every forum I looked at, the Four Points, or the Crowne Plaza, which surprised me by returning a rate of $139 for our travel date. But through the SPG website, I was able to get 1 night at the Four Points with 8 nights' parking for $100 (a whole $1 more than the Best Western!), so that's where were staying.

I am *so* glad I found something that is available, convenient and within our budget, because I really REALLY didn't want to drive to the airport in the wee hours of the morning in January! :scared1:

I posted a thread with this same question earlier this week! Sounds like you got a great deal. Can you tell me what the SPG website is that you found the $100 rate? Thank you!

How about the Holiday Inn? It's a little bit farther away from the airport than the others but they have a shuttle and unlimited parking. Has anyone stayed there?

If you're not horribly far from the airport, you might also look into the cost of a taxi (many taxi companies have vans if you have lots of luggage....and many companies will also give you a flat rate fee and discount if you book them ahead....the driver's love knowing they have a guaranteed fare!)

Or....pay a neighbor gas money and maybe a batch of cookies to run you back and forth.

Ok, that's of course my idea of a better alternative, but I really really dislike leaving my car in those lots. I know they say they're secure, but I've had so many friends have their cars broken into while at airport lots, I simply do anything to not leave my car there! Once, I even rented a car from Enterprise (they'll come pick you up) for a day, dropped it off at the airport and then when I returned 2 weeks later, rented a car at the airport and dropped it off at the Enterprise near me...and they drove me home. I kept it overnight, picking it up the evening before our trip so no rush with the paperwork and loading luggage, etc....then came home from airport and unloaded, got a good night sleep then dropped it off the next morning. It was probably the same cost as parking at the lot, but my car stayed safe and sound in my garage and no long shuttle ride from lot to terminal, because the car rental drop off is much closer than long term parking.

I would also suggest you see if any of them have a covered garage . We took that kind so when we do come back if there is 12ft of snow on our car we don't spend 30 minutes cleaning it off and then drivng home 3 hours.

Unfortunately, we're not anywhere near the airport. We're actually closer to Port Huron than to Detroit, at the very edge of the suburbs on the opposite side of the city from the airport. We actually prefer to fly out of Flint because it is an easier drive, but for this trip, we're saving about $500 on airfare by flying out of DTW. That's enough of a difference for me to put up with the hassle. Town car service one way from my town is $120+, depending on the company.

The travel time is also a factor for us, because we have an early flight and a 2 hour drive to the airport, assuming no weather delays. Since we're going in Jan, weather delays are a likely possibility too. To get to the airport the recommended 1.5 hours before our flight, we'd have to leave home at 4ish, earlier if the weather is bad. Getting a room is a lot easier than getting two Disney-hyper kids to bed early enough for a 3am wake-up!

I don't mind leaving my car in the airport parking, though. I don't keep anything of value in it, don't have a sound system or anything like that worth stealing, and well.... My 10yo minivan practically screams "don't bother" at potential thieves. LOL I'm probably a little more tolerant of parking in bad areas, though, because I lived in the city for years, worked late nights downtown, and parked in far worse places than the quick-park at Metro airport! :rotfl:

I joined and then got the $100 rate.

Does the Four Points have a free breakfast? (Can't find any mention of it on their website).

Yep, that's the site. I'm a member because we like the Sheratons at Niagara and Toronto, and will probably try the Dolphin someday too. I've had nothing but good experiences with them as a chain.

I didn't think to look to see if they have free breakfast, because I love Starbucks lattes & scones. Our town is sadly Starbuck-less, so eating at the airport is actually a treat for me! :rotfl:

I'd really like the Four Points as well - I'm getting a $100 park-n-fly rate (plus fees of course) on their site. Here's my question: the fine print says "One Night Accomodations At The Hotel. And Up To 8 Days Parking At Quik Park. Free Shuttle Service To.And From Detroit Metro Airport, 24 Hours."

So... the Quik Park is 1/4 mile away. How do you get there? Walking? We fly back into DTW at 10:00 pm, and we're bringing back a 10 week old puppy for some friends. I don't want to walk at night, in the cold, with our luggage and the pup. Any ideas how far it really is?

I just want to get up the morning of our early flight and take the shuttle to the airport. And then on our return, get back to the hotel and take off. (If the car is snowy and cold, I can stay in the lobby with the pup and DH can brush off the car.)

You can park at the parking facility the night before you fly and then take the airport shuttle from your hotel. When you return from your vacation, you take the parking facility shuttle to the parking area--no hotel stop. I suppose you could take your hotel shuttle back to the hotel, but your car will still be at the facility a fair distance away. I'm not sure there is a way around the need to shuttle to your car versus your previously stayed in hotel.

You are also able to park at the parking facility the day of your flight (thereby saving a day of free parking) and then take the parking facility shuttle to the airport rather than the hotel shuttle.

That seems a bit confusing, hope it's not though!

Tess - that makes sense. I realized after I posted that we would be taking the Qwik Park shuttle directly back to our car, not needing to go back to the hotel for any reason.

I think we're going to go ahead with the Four Points Sheraton. It looks nice, and I'm thinking I can use the exercise room to tire me out so I sleep the night before the trip. :)

Hopefully the Qwik Park driver will allow a puppy on the shuttle (we're bring one back), as long as I keep it inside the carrier.

The Sheraton was under total renovation when we visited for the recon mission. :) All new flooring spreads, etc. The bar area was very nice and there was a dining area. I was guessing they provided the morning continental type breakfast, but not sure on that point. The pool area was nice, fairly standard size for a smaller hotel. The fitness room looked well-equipped when we visited.

Really, the only hotels we had issues with (after actual overnight stays) were the Best Western and Clarion. The Ramada (formerly a Fairfield) was alright for what it was, but the pool was outdoors.

Have fun, I'm sure you will be happy with your choice.
