DSi or Ipod Touch?

I was going to buy my children (4 1/2 and 7 1/2) the Dsi for Christmas. Now I am thinking that the ipod touch might be a better option. They both play games and music on my iphone and know how to navigate it well. What are your opinions on which one I should get. With rebates I can get them both for about the same price, although I am considering paying more if I get the itouch and getting the 32gb so they can also watch movies on it. Any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I would do the regular DS Lite for them. The DSi really doesn't have anything that great on it to justify the extra cost. Plus with the DS Lite you can buy Game Boy Advance games dirt cheap to play as well.

I think the iPod Touch is a bit much for kids that young and not as durable! Maybe get them a cheap MP3 player for now for music purposes.

We are getting ds 6 an ipod touch. we have debated this same issue for about 6 months. he uses my dh's ipod touch all the time...probably more then dh. Dh thinks if we get him his own then he can get his back. I like the touch because there are games and movies and music. the ds only does games. I think it is crazy a 6 year old is getting a touch but if i'm going to spend the money i want to buy what is going to be used the most and longest. He already knows he has to be careful when playing with dh's touch and he does well with it.
So have you found any good deals...i'm still holding out to find a good one. We want at least a 16 or 32.

Being the age they are I think the DSi is the better choice.

amazon has a great deal on the DSi right now

Or maybe the DSi for the 4 1/2 and the touch for the 7 1/2 then they can switch around if one wants to play with the other (if they are good with sharing)

the DSi not only does games it does music and has a camera also.

I really don't recommend the DS or DSi because frankly I think it's a 'brick'. And not because of the weight. It's because of the additional games you have to buy, getting them lost, etc.

For a little more you can get the iPod Touch. With that said, if you do get a Touch for a child that young, be sure to get a hard-case that has a lanyard attached to it because kids can and will drop it and bang it around. Also, and this is a must, get a screen protector for it.

Hope that helps! :goodvibes

Hi, we debated this also. My girls are 5 and 7. We went with the touch for the following reasons. We travel a lot and this is much smaller and easier to carry around in the car, planes, trains etc. The touch has lots of games for younger kids, and they don't cost $40.00 each, in the long run much cheaper. The touch also has music and movies. I took my 5 year old into the Apple store before purchasing, she's been talking about it since. I personally think that if you explain how to use it and that they have to be careful with it they should be fine. That said I will be purchasing the case and screen protectors.

Not trying to be argumentative but my son is 12 and has had every Nintendo handheld since he was 4 and has never lost not even 1 game and we also never paid $40 for a handheld game, we wait a month or two and they come down, check target clearance and use GameStop.

You have to buy games, videos, music etc for the ipod Touch also unless you plan on only installing free.

Both systems have their plus and minus points.

another plus for the DSi is it can take a little bit more abuse than a ipod touch which I think is a big plus when your child is 4+ no matter how careful they are.

Not promoting one over the other just pointing out some things that might help the OP make a choice.

For that age I would go with the DS, it has a lot of games you can get for the younger set and it's easier to use IMO. Most kids have them and that also makes them popular, when their friends have them.

x....like 4/5...lol I say DS FTW!
ipods are great, but the DS is a way better gaming platform imho. Our dd8 has both an ipod Nano(1st generation...it was Mom's old one and when I bought mom a new 8gig Nano a fw years back, DD got the old one), as well as a DSi&lite. She uses the DS way way way more than the iPod. Not saying she doesn't like the iPod, she loves to get her groove on, but she just does more DS play than iPod.
my .02¢

As the mom to a DS9, I vote for the DSI. They will have a camera, games, wi-fi. They can "sinc" them together to play games at the same time with each other and other kiddos with DSI's. My DS has never lost any games, as we got him a "gaming" back pack type pack that holds his DSI, games, charger, ext. We also bought the nerf DSI holder so that if he drops it, it won't break. He loves it! Good luck with your choice! I am sure either one will be great!:goodvibes

another reason is cost the 32gig 3rd gen touch is around $300 including tax

the DSi is $169 full price with amazon deal right now with preloads $155

If you get at least one DSi and it gets broken the replacement cost is going to be a lot less.

Another thing to consider is upgrades all systems upgrade and your kids are going to want the latest and greatest believe me....so next year when the new Touch is released you can upgrade and the older child can pass his touch along to the younger.

With 2 different systems they will have more choices which is good for children since their attention span can be so short.

Not at all! :goodvibes You've made some great points and the more information the OP has, all the better to make a decision best for them. :thumbsup2

:goodvibes Oh Good, TY, every family is different and I am a true believer in info is power the more info the better the decision but some get offended so easily.

I will never forget when DS wanted a PSP and I did not do my research and his grandfather bought it for him and I kid you not the very next week they released a new version! I was livid with myself!

We are in the same situation...except my DS10 wants an Ipod Touch and a PSP. He already has a DS...and doesn't want the DSi.

So...I basically told him I'm not getting him both. They do similar things since the PSP can play movies, games, and does music just like the Touch. I told him one or the other and he picked the Touch.

Does anyone know of any specials on the Ipod Touch?

I have checked out the Apple site and have considered the refurbished 16gb (2nd Gen) for $199.

I've also seen the 8GB on www.bfads.net listed at Wal-Mart for $188 with a $50 iTunes card...or at Toys R Us for $199 with a $50 Toys R Us card. I think these are both Black Friday sales and they seem to think that Amazon may do something along the same lines with a $188 price tag and some kind of $50 gift card (hopefully Amazon.com GC).

Any other specials that I missed?

ETA: I also agree with the previous poster that kids always want the next greatest thing. That's why I'm not considering a $300 (although you can purchase it for $279.99 from Target right now) 32gb. I'm looking at the 8gb for around $200 with a $50 gift card to effectively make the price around $150, because I'm sure he will want something newer/different/better next year for Christmas. Being an IT manager, I know that if you stay one step behind the newest, most current, technology, you end up with alot more money in your pocket.

Speed :teleport:

We purchased the 8gb touch for my ds8 - the DSi is just to similar to the DS he got LAST Christmas ;). I agree they ALWAYS want the next thing!

thanks so much!! I'll have to learn how to download them. I thought itunes was only music. :rolleyes1

Just go to the iTunes store, up at the top there are tabs for Music, Movies, TV shows, Apps

you do not even have to go to the App tab for the freebees l listed just type the name into the search bar upper right and it should load a page with anything that matches the search including music, apps, podcasts etc.

then click on the app you want read the description it should tell you if the app is FREE or what the price is you then click on Get App if you want to download and that is it.
