DS6 & Stroller

I have a dS6 who is autistic. We usually rent a double stroller at the World so he has more room - he is 54" tall and about 52#. It costs us over $100 to rent the doubleso we are thinking of buying one basically for WDW but don't want to spend too much.

My question is this: Are there any strollers out there that are light weight and could hold him? If you have a stroller, what kind is it and do you like it? I saw some Maclarens that will hold up to 55# but I am wondering if if could hold more.?

Any info you can give will be greatly appreciated!

There are some places that rent special needs strollers (basically the ones that are made for older, larger children). They are listed in the disABILITIES FAQs thread near the top of the board.

If you want to look for one to buy, this is a good site:

look for the page with strollers and pushchairs. They are rather expensive, but if he needs to have one for things like shopping trips, etc, insurance might pay for it.

7 years ago, my DS6 had a hip disorder and needed an stroller. We also decided to purchase as he would need it in the airport, didn't want to worry about doubles being gone, etc.

We found large but lightweight jogging stroller. It was very long to accomodate his height, and the wheel came off quite easily for loading onto Disney transportation.

It also cocooned him a bit on the sides, which might be a benefit when your child needs to hide-out from overstimulation.

It cost us about $120 back then. I can't recall the brand. I want to think we got it at a bike shop, but we looked at alot of places to find one large enought to accommodate him comfortably.

If I have some time this evening (playing mommi taxi as DH is out of town) I'll see if I can post some links to something similar.

It was soooo well worth the money. And much more comfortable for him.

If you get a jogging stroller, look for one with smaller, swivel wheels on the front. In the past, WDW was not allowing the strollers with large, non-swiveling front wheels at times. They were considered hazards because the front tire sticks out so far from the front of the stroller and they had incidents of people tripping over the tires. Without a swivel wheel, the way to turn them means 'popping up' the front tire and 'bumping' the back tires over to change directions.
