He wants to know what was here before the universe formed. :confused3

Anyone else ever been asked this by their kids? What did you tell them?

I'm sure it depends on what you believe. But I'd just tell him that there are some things that we don't know the answer to.

Nothing.

It's actually a difficult concept to comprehend; there was no space, no time, literally nothing. Everything in our universe was squished into one, singular speck, so dense with energy that nothing could exist yet, including time, space or matter.

See if your library has any of Stephen Hawkings books; A Brief HIstory of Time, or The Universe in a Nutshell is probably better for a younger kid.

He's not the type of kid who will take that for an answer. He has to find out what makes everything tick.

DS is in 4th grade, but reads at a 7th grade level. Do you think he'd understand The Universe in a Nutshell?

Yes.

If you believe the big bang theory then all matter/energy was squeezed down into minute form. with no energy anywhere time really didn't exist. There was no light (light=energy) With that much matter and energy sharing such a small space they atoms were colliding. Soon one would hit another and they woudl break. Causing an explosion. Which sent everything flying out, creating planets, stars and eventually life.

Personally I believe that it had to have been another universe sucked into a huge black hole to compress everything like that. and I also belive that everything was still inside the hole. when the atomic explosion happened, it destroyed the hole, and everything was propelled outward. But that is just my opinion.

I haven't read it myslef, but it came highly recommended.

I checked some reviews on Amazon, and it mentions "adult/high school" righting, and plenty of pictures to help visualize things.

Some concepts may be a stretch, but it also might make him more interested in learning more about it.

Just tell him the answer is beyond the present reach of science.

Or go ask Dick Clark if he remembers.

No idea what to say to that one, lol.

But dd stumped us, and her PSR teacher, and the priest when she asked "Why did G*d make us people?" When asked for clarification, she says "You know, instead of making us something else?"

My Dad LOVES telling the story of the day he realized that kids have truly amazing brainpower...I was 3, and asked "How can people smile, with angry eyes?" Watch around you -- it happens...

Kids, I tell ya.

I believe the Bible says the world was a dark void. So, there was nothing, but God.

When one of my DD ask a question beyond my comprehension, I tell them to ask their dad :thumbsup2
That is a tough question though. It makes you wonder how the smallest of minds work :goodvibes

The nuns said God, and that's a mystery, so just believe it. Anytime I try to comprehend the beginning, my head hurts, so I have not thought about it lately.

Even if some of the above speak of the super compressed speck, where did that first speck come from? I buy into the God theory and figure I will see, someday, if the nuns were kidding me, and that day seems like it gets closer every year, and quicker too. :faint:

My DD once asked me who made God. I told her that no one made God. He has always just been. She didn't buy it. She said something had to create God. She didn't really understand the concept of infinity. It is a toughie.
