My son came home with a 70 on his science test and now needs to correct his wrong answers. The answers that he gave seems right to me (although I might be wrong....it just sounds right, ya know?) Can someone help? I have looked online for the past couple of hours and I just can't seem to find the right answer to fit. I will post what he wrote as his answer

1--How do we see colors? (if it helps, you can give an example)

2--What makes some objects look black? white? gray?

Thanks so much

These were his answers that he got wrong.
1--We see colors through our cones, for an example when we look at something our cones are processing information about that color and the colored cones mixes red, blue & green to make that color.

2--Black is being absorbed by other colors and light is reflecting it.
White is being reflected by other colors and light.
Gray is being 1/2 absorbed and 1/2 reflected.

All of this info is in his science book. None of it should be hard to find if he reads the chapter. Let him do the work. You can give him moral support, but it is his responsiblity.

Yes, I'm a teacher...:teacher:

Their class does not have a science text book (strange I know, but true) We have been looking on the internet as well, but everything seems so long winded and too scientific for an answer to his questions. The answers that he got off of his notes are what he wrote down but the teacher says they are the wrong answers (his notes are at school so I can't compare what he has to what is in the notes) I wasn't really looking for anyone to totally answer the question, just some help. And I have been helping him look online (I wasn't trying to do his homework for him either)

I tried looking it up online to see if I could help at all and all I got were the long-winded answers as well but it looks as if both rods and cones are involved.

If I remember correctly, the answer has to do with rods AND cones for both questions. The black white gray question is probably referring to why when it's dark we see only shades of gray. I don't remember how it works (I teach math, not biology), but something happens in the dark when the pupil opens and it changes the way the rods and cones work.

You'll have to take it from there.

From what you said about the notes, I would make an appointment with the science teacher and go in and ask what she's looking for. This way, you can find out for sure what this particular teacher wants on her test questions and you can then work with your son on his homework accordingly. Especially since there's no book and you can find all kinds of answers online, but if your son isn't writing the answer the teacher wants, he'll be marked wrong no matter how accurate his answer might be.
