DS made the front page of the metro section

My dad took DS to turn in their collection of lightning bugs on Tuesday. He made $10.70, we didn't collect as many this year as last. He also got interviewed and his picture and some comments he made were on the front page of the B section in yesterday's Chattanooga Times Free Press.

I must be a clueless northerner, but what do you turn lightning bugs in for? And to whom? And why do you get money for it?

they collected fireflies in tennessee for scientific research. in 2003 a dixie cup filled with fireflies went for $9.30... wonder what they are up to now!

The link above is to a post I submitted earlier in the summer about lightning bug collection. Post 12 or 13 has an article from one of the research facilities that collect the bugs.

We are in Tennessee and they were $10.50 per ounce this year.
