AAARRRGGGGHHHHH!

My poor little guy is sick and we are supposed to drive to the airport tomorrow night for our Saturday flight. :(

He woke up last night about 3:00 crying and when I went to check up on him he kept telling me he was "hot, hot, hot". I dug the thermometer out of our luggage (I just finished packing last night) and he had a 102.5 fever. I gave him some Tylenol and comforted him until he went back to sleep. His fever has been about 100.5-101.5 since then. I keep asking him if anything hurts and he always says no but it is hard to tell when they are that young.

I know that last Friday his daycare teacher told me that several kids went home with fevers and no other symptoms that day. I think that all of those kids were back by Monday so I am thinking maybe DS has some kind of viral thing that will clear up in a few days.

I am concerned that it could be an ear infection especially since we are flying. I can't imagine how bad that would hurt. We decided not to take him to the doctor today because the roads are bad due to the weather and we are hoping that he will be fever-free tomorrow. If he is still sick tomorrow I guess we will have to take him to the doctor just to rule out ear infection, etc. He has only had 1 ear infection in the past and that was at the same time as pneumonia so my gut really tells me it is a viral infection.

Of course at this point we don't know what to do. We are so close to our trip that we would be out a lot of money. Rescheduling would be VERY difficult. DH cannot take off another full week until mid/late June because their busy season will start next week. I really can't imagine making a late June visit. I don't like the heat/humidity/crowd combination.

I just really don't know what to do...... :(

Doesn't it figure,he's healthy until its time to go to WDW!!
Hope you're little one feels better soon!

There's been something going around at my DDs school too. It could just be one of those 24 hour things because a lot of things kids pick up from school seem to be. Has he been eating okay? I was just asking b/c my DS is getting a new tooth in and it has caused him to run a little fever and he hasn't been having much of an appitite, so maybe he could just be getting a new tooth. Have you tried feeling his gums to see if there are signs of one coming in? I hope he feels better...it's such a bummer that it's happening before your trip. But hopefully it'll be gone just as quickly as a came.

I would get him into the doctor right away today. An ear infection is nothing to mess with. It COULD just be a virus, but a fever is tough on a little one.

Aww, poor little guy!

With little kids, sometimes they can bounce back pretty quick. Keep your fingers crossed!

Do you have any urgent care clinics nearby? If you could just get some peace of mind and KNOW what it is then you could make a course of action based on that. If it is just a viral thing that will pass, chances are...he is going through the worst of it right now and will have residual effects while at Disney. If it is an ear infection, you can get him treated for it and still go. Chances are, you probably won't need to cancel but I would go to your doctor or a clinic and figure out what is going on.

I hope he gets to feeling better and everything goes smoothly!

{{hugs}}and if he wakes up tomorrow with a fever, I'd call the doctor and try to get in and rule out the ears. Better safe than sorry. Otherwise, hopefully it's just a 24 hour bug and will work itself out. If not, we'll be one of those families in the heat and humidity wandering around the world 6/19-6/26. You'd be in good company.;) :) Just kidding, I'm sure it will work out and you'll go have a great time. I'm envious you're getting to leave this lovely weather here behind. Bring back the :sunny: :sunny: :sunny:

Becka,

As long as he doesn't have any other symptoms and you're able to bring his fever down I wouldn't worry too much. DD had a virus like that last summer. It came out of nowhere on a Friday night and lasted until Sunday morning. I just keep giving tylenol/motrin and pushing ice pops. With the full effect of the medicine she felt like playing but as it wore off she'd just lay on the couch.

I'm sending PD that Nathan will be better in the morning. Have a great trip.

Oh No! When our kids were younger it seemed that they were ALWAYS sick when it was vacation time!

If he still isn't feeling well once you get to Florida (I'm assuming you are going to WDW??) there are several places you can take him. We have been to both the Celebration Hospital and the Urgent Care near Downtown Disney. Both were very good.

I have found with my kids that they both bounce back real fast once they have medication. DD5 had a double ear infection AND walking pneumonia last week. I took her to the dr. and after just one dose of the antibiotic she was running around and you would never know she was sick.

I hope all will be well!

Jill

I hope our Nathan is feeling better and totally afebrile very soon. {{{HUGS}}} Becka

Becka,

I would call and make an appointment for tomorrow morning and then cancel if needed.

Pixie dust, pixie dust, pixie dust!!! Just a thought, but maybe you could call the doctor, tell him what's going on and that you're leaving and maybe he could write a script for something, and then if the little guy needs it when you get down there, you wouldn't have to go through too much. Just have to get the script filled.

I agree with the suggestion of talking to a doc asap. I think there's a very good chance that you won't need to cancel. When our kids had infections they repsonded to the meds usually within 24 hours or so. How long are you planning to stay at WDW? Maybe you could take it easy for the first day or two and as he begins to feel better, pick up the pace? All the best:earsboy:

Hoping little Nathan is doing better, Becka, and all goes as planned for the trip. for you all.

I was reading Debster's trip reports and she was saying that her little guy woke up with an ear infection the right before they flew out. He got a dose of antibiotic in him and it sounded like that did the trick for the plane ride.

She also put in the ear plugs that you can buy for flying, but he wanted them out on the plane.

As far as the fever goes, I find that children's advil works so much better if he is old enough. Just make sure he eats!

Hope all goes well!

Sending lots of PD for little Nathan!! Sure hope he's feeling better quickly!!

Thanks everyone! :)

I really don't think it is an ear infection based on the symptoms (or lack thereof) that I am seeing. His fever is still bouncing around between 100 - 102 depending on how close he is to the next dose of medicine. I am trying both Tylenol and Motrin but unfortunately he gagged on his last dose of Motrin and it all came back up along with his dinner. :( Poor little guy....this is classic viral infection type stuff for him. He gets these same fevers about once every 3-4 months. Unfortunately since they are viral there is nothing they can give him to make him better faster.

I will be trying to get an early appointment with the doctor unless he magically wakes up without a fever tomorrow...which is what I am really hoping for right now.

Thanks for the good thoughts and pixie dust.

I'm sending a couple more buckets of pixie dust (along with what you've already received from your DIS friends) for Nathan to wake up fever-free in the morning.
