My DS has braces and will not be able to chew gum on the plane...any other suggestions? He also hates anything fruit flavored. Or will gum be ok just the 2 times? He has terrible issues with his ears also so I don't want to just chance it. Thanks.

My kids don't like gum or chewy candy, so we buy Earplanes for DS. They work great for him.

I've always used tootsie pops for my kids and sudafed (decongestent) Or drinking helps, so if you got him something to drink thru a straw that would help too :goodvibes

When my DD had braces she was told she could chew gum as long as it was sugarless! Let him have gum. He will not ruin his smile with 2 pieces of gum.

My son doesn't like chewing gum. I always buy him pushpops for the trip. That way when he's not sucking on it, he can keep it in the container so there's no sticky candy in my bag.

I chewed gum when I had braces. It took off the pressure the day I got them tightened. By the end, I was very naughty and even ate a taffy apple off the stick. I think my mom was glad when I got those off--she didn't have to de-corn the corn cob anymore either.

Two pieces of gum will not ruin the work. Braces take a long time to do their job. A couple hours off of work will not make them worthless.

Just my opinion.

my very naughty dd chew tons of sugarless gum all the time. Thank goodness they have it, she is soooo addicted to gum! Let the sweet boy chew the sugarless and all will be well with the world. :thumbsup2

Getting ready to pack our own gum for WDW- 6 days left now!

Both of my boys currently have braces. The reason they shouldn't chew gum or eat sticky foods is not because it will "ruin the work." It's because sticky foods can get caught in the braces and cause them to break. The last thing you want on a vacation is a broken bracket. It can be uncomfortable for the child and a broken bracket will stop the braces from working and possibly reverse some if the good they've done so far.

To keep ears from popping and becoming painful while flying, I would recommend Ear Planes. You can get them from Drugstore.com. My younger son's ears bother him when flying and the Ear Planes really help.

My dd just got braces, and her ortho suggested no gum. Her friend with braces, though, can chew a non-stick gum--Freedent, I think, so you might want to look into that!

Thanks for the replies. I did ear planes before, so I will do those again with sudafed and I will try the suckers and drinking from a straw. I am hesitant abouthte gum as he has a "complicated" (and very expensive) case and I would hate for him to break a wire or bracket. Thanks again.:thumbsup2

What about a sucking candy like werther's? It's the swallowing that helps, not the chewing!!

Fruit Snacks! They're chewy, but not too chewy or sticky, and they'll become un-stuck with a little toothbrushing :)

I had braces or other orthodontic appliances from 3rd to almost 9th grade... I know these things :)

GL!

right before u board the plane buy him a bottled drink and have him sip it throughout takeoff, its about the swallowing not the chewing;)

my daughter had braces for 18 months and her orthodontist recommended that she chew gum all she wanted to increase her saliva output (hers is low)

so I think you should ask your orthodontist if your child can chew gum on the plane

Great post!! My DS8 currently has an RPE (Rapid Palatial Expander) but on August 25th he is supposed to be getting his braces. We are leaving for WDW on Sept 11th so this will be a whole new thing for us. I was wondering what we could do to help with his ears too. He has never flown before and has bad sinus problems. His ear even ache when he is diving in the pool. I have never heard of Earplanes. Is there anywhere local you can pick them up or do you have to order them? I was already going to dose everyone with Sudafed, including DH and myself. Any other suggestions? :goodvibes

We have always been able to find Ear Planes in the pharmacy department at Walmart. Probably your local drug store/pharmacy will have them also. They have worked great with my kids even when the were just getting colds on the way home.

We are not gum chewers, not even on planes. I take snacks like goldfish crackers or cheezeits. When I feel the pressure building in my ears, I have them yawn to relieve the pressure. When they were younger, I had sippy cups.
