After trying various suggestions here..................the Coke won!!! I had to scrape the bottom a bit while it was boiling, but it worked!! Thanks everyone!

My 12 year old DS was showing our 2 younger girls a "science project" he learned in class. Sugar and water, how it looks like the sugar disappeared......but he boiled the water off to show how the sugar was really still there. Well, he burned the bottom of the pan!!! I'm talking black as night, stuck to the bottom, became as one with the bottom burnt!!

I have tried soaking it in VERY hot water, with soap, every day ( it has been 2 weeks now :teeth: ). A few people even suggested boiling vinegar in the pan, and nothing! Does anyone have a different suggestion??? I'm all ears....errr eyes. This is from a good set of pans, my Wolf Gang Puck set. :guilty:

IF it is stainless steel--we use "Barkeeper's friend". With some elbow grease and a paste soak--you can make a good effort to remove anywhere from part if not all of hte stain.

We do this with our all clad--some stains are more permanent than others---but with several washings I have been able to greatly reduce the appearance of the worst scaldings.

**it is sold in a gold can with a blue diamond or some shape on it that the name is on...I find it in a variety of places in the store..sometimes near the comet and ajax and sometimes near the surface cleaners. it is completely safe to use on pans.

what about sprinkling Ajax or Comet on it, then add water and bring it to a boil. Pour most of the water out, then use a scrubber that won't damage your pan.

Or do you have one of those scunci steamers? That might help.

uh,, have you tryed oven cleaner? take the pan outdoors. away from kids/pets, spray it inside with easy off ( its made to remove burnt on baked on gunk) let sit, spray with water hose, repeat till pans clean.

I've heard of a few methods but I don't know if they work or not

Fill the pan with water and dump in salt. Bring it to a boil and then let it set for 12 hours and bring to a boil again. If that doesn't do it you can add even more salt and try again.

Another one I've heard is

Add hot water to the pan with a used fabric softener sheet from your laundry. Let soak and the burnt crust will lift right off.

Another one is to put a generous amount of Auto dishwashing soap into the pan, fill almost to the top with water and bring to a boil. Let it simmer for 10 min and then soak it for 30 min

The last one I've heard is toothpaste. Coat the bottom of the pan and let it sit all night and wash in the morning.

Good luck...I hate when stuff like this happens in my house!

Thanks everyone, for the suggestions so far. If it was a cheap pan, I would just throw it out.....but it's not a cheap pan. :sad2:

If the pan is oven safe, I'd spray it with oven cleaner put it in the oven and clean both at the same time. Not sure if it's safe to use the built in oven cleaner feature (If you have one) with the pot inside.

The sugar is burnt to the bottom of the pan or the bottom (underside) of the pan is burnt?? If it is the underside that is burnt...it's permanent. If it is the sugar that is burnt then maybe try making a paste out of creme of tartar (a powder in the baking aisle). Suff is supposed to work great.

You know that show How Clean is Your House with those two british ladies. Well, they said to boil Coca Cola in it and it will come out. It works. Give it a go.

If that doesnt work, put some baking soda in the pan and squirt some lemon juice on it. This usually works fantastic for me.

Good Luck

I once saw some type of household hints show where the women were demonstrating just the remedy for burnt pans. Put the pan in a plastic garbage bag. Pour in 1 cup of regular household ammonia. Tie the bag closed. Let sit for a couple of hours, then open bag and retrieve your clean pan. Supposedly no scrubbing required.

I am not sure about burnt on sugar but automatic dishwasher detergent and water (hot from the tap) soak off the nastiest crud that my pans have had burnt on to them.

Just squirt or sprinkle on the soap and add hot water, let it soak a while and it should wash right off.

This tip actually came in a brochure with my stainless pots and pans as a remedy for removing burned food. Haven't actually tried it out yet (no need, thankfully) but it does sound hopeful. Let us know! :teeth:

Yeah, I helped out!!! :cool1:

I love those ladies on that show. Its disgusting but I have to watch.

I am so glad that I remember seeing this thread a little bit ago. I burnt my Stainless pan black tonight.

So I will be picking up a can of coke tomorrow and giving that a try. :thumbsup2
