Any of 'dem ol' DISers here the fan of the drum and horn? AKA the drum and bugle corps? There must be someone!

Me Me Me!! I am such a huge fan of DCI. I got to watch the Carolina Crown practice this past summer at our local University and I took my kids and they had a blast.

Crown is really coming up strong. One of these years, they're gonna break into the top 3. :cool1:

I marched Cadets (when they were still Garfield Cadets) when I was 8 (plebes) and the "big corps" 1977 to 1979 after which I marched in Bridgemen in 1980 (best year ever).

My sister was a Cadet and my dad and grandfather both marched in Holy Name and my dad was around for the whole Holy Name to Cadets fiasco. My dad also designed the original Garfield Cadet logo that was worn on the uniforms up until a couple of years ago. We're trying to get him into the hall of fame this year. We tried last year but it didn't happen.

You guys might enjoy this. My aunt sent me this link yesterday :goodvibes

I was amazed and I don't really know anything about how difficult what they're doing must be.

ETA- it's about 6 minutes, so if you don't have that long, at least watch the part that starts at 3:40 :)

Talk about bring a tear to your eye. This stuff always makes me tear up. LOL

I marched with Fantasia back from 81-83. Check out my scrapbook page of us.

And I know my dad/brother/sister marched with Suncoast Sound (I believe that's the name)

So thats what happened to the Bridgemen!

Not really sure. I know that after 1980 when we finished 3rd at DCI I went back to march the next year and there were many kids that aged out. These were the kids that were there for the "new" Bridgemen in 76-77 and seemed to really be the core of the organization. It just didn't feel the same. It just seemed like they faded away.

They have a pretty good alumni corps now though.

Mike, are you going to any of the anniversary activities in May?

I was in the all girls Mountettes Drum & Bugle Corp in the late 60's early 70's. It eventually went co-ed.

My DD's best friend marched in Spirit (of Jackson State ???) last summer.

My DD was being recruited for Teal Sound as a Guard Chick, but she did not really want to spend the summer on a bus.

Obviously, the BIG names in DCI are concentrated up north. I went to the DCI show in Orlando last summer and really had a great time. There are a LOT of really GREAT Corps out there...................

We'd go and watch DCI at J. Birney Crum Stadium in Allentown at the beginning of every August while I was growing up. I didn't appreciate all of the hard work that went into the performance back then, but I do now. Does anyone know if DCI still comes to Allentown? We only live about 15 away from the stadium.
