I'm always amazed at how people know that the shopper in front of them is using food stamps. I believe most states have moved to a debit card-like way of issuing them. So how do you know what they are using? Does the cashier tell you that? And you look in their cart and judge what they are buying? I'm more focused on my own stuff.

Many supermarkets have a small monitor screen on a pole indicating the amount spent. For food stamp customers it might say something like "EBT total, $56.23, cash due $6.87" It's for the immediate customer's eyes, but it's easy for those behind them or in the next line to see it too.

Okay I was going to stay out of this but you are so off base I just can't. As a foster parent my children were entitled to snap benefits. So you know what you may see in my cart meat milk yogurt produce cookies etc etc. you have no idea what the situation of the person in front of you is. You just go to the stereotype. If you look at who is qualified to receive snap is mainly working families. The largest group living in poverty is children. 1 in 3 children in the U.S. living in poverty. Snap benefits have a less than 3% abuse rate. I guess I could judge all teachers by the 3% incompetent and abusive, but I don't

This HAS to be a joke. Please tell me what are they buying and how they are acting that is a dead giveaway they are using food stamps without any confirmation.

In all fairness speaking for dh and I if we have bin food items to buy or if it's the end of the month we use two forms of payments

I was not talking about people taking care od foster kids I was talking about people that use drugs and don't want to work.

It's not that hard really. Food stamps which isn't really food stamps, but a debit card basically, only pays for food, so the items that are not food, come up at the end as a balance due so the customer has to pay cash or cc or write a check, etc. for the balance. If you are just standing behind them unloading your own groceries, you can certainly see/hear what's being said.

Yes, I do think drug testing should be mandatory for welfare recipients.

And you can tell the difference how? I had a friend, another foster mother, who was followed to her car by people saying awful things to her because they didn't like what she bought with their money. How about you keep you eyes on your own cart and your judgments in your head

Do we drug test CEO's getting corporate welfare from our government? Do we drug test our senators and representatives? If the answer to this is NO then I don't think we have any business trying to stigmatize poor people. Waste of money. In the few places where this has been attempted, the cost of running the program (drug testing) has far outweighed the savings of getting a very small number of people off welfare rolls.

Honestly, if I replied to this the way I want I'd never be allowed to post again.

And if the mods had any sense they'd get you a few points for being a political post. I won't hold my breath.

you do have to make tow orders since stamps to not cover none food items. so you got that wrong

That's another good point. I know someone who has custody of her grandchildren She wants to adopt them but the parents refuse to sign over their rights. They don't pay any child support. I know she gets medicaid for them because she can't cover them under their employee medical until she adopts them. I think she may also get food stamps since the parents don't pay child support.

I think some folks should work in a soup kitchen or food pantry for a while.

As the office manager at our church, I hear lots of stories and see lots of people needing, asking for, and begging for some help. Yea there probably are some scammers. But for the most part there is real need for basic necessities in every community every day. And you don't have to look that hard to find them.

And that is what's a shame in the US of A today.
