Dropping a day vs. adding a day

If we are unsure of our exact travel dates, I assume it is better to book more days on a package and drop one later rather than trying to add one later, right? Are there any constraints on dropping a day? What I'm worried about is do they make you re-book the entire package as a new reservation so that if there is nothing available (or the free dining booking window has ended) you are out of luck?

For example, we're looking at going Friday, March 30, 2012 through Friday, April 6, 2012. If we can get a good evening flight on Thursday, we might want to check in on Thursday, March 29 instead. But I won't know that until I can book my flights.

If we book March 29 - April 6 now, will I be able to change it to March 30 - April 6 later?

(I'm talking about the full package of resort, tickets and dining (free dining).)

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Dropping a day is generally easier than adding a day.
The only issue I can think of is you are arriving against a package or rate that would be impacted by not arriving during a specific time. (Example: the day you plan to arrive is the last day for whatever promotion. And that promotion is not good for arrivals on your new date.)
Or I suppose if you are downgrading a package under the specified arrival timeframe where there are penalties.

I think as long as you make changes prior to the 45-day mark, you would be OK. After 45 days, it would be a $50 change fee, which they'll happily waive if you make a change that increases the price of the package.

A $50 fee is actually pretty reasonable...I hope Disney doesn't take any tips from Air Canada ($150 per change, per leg, per passenger, are you kidding me!?)

Yup, and that's why we are stuck the with black-out DDP dates for our resort reservation. Just way to expensive to change our flight!

My initial question is now moot since Disney changed the free dining dates. Now we have to go down on March 29 to get FD. I'm hoping I can find decent flights that don't get us into Orlando at midnight with two kids!

Are you already booked? When did you book? If you booked when the dates were March 25-31, then you will be fine, they will still honor your reservation.

BUT, if you change the dates to the 30th, then no... it won't be honored anymore since the new dates are March 24-29.

I booked last night. The night before that, March 30 was still included in FD, but by yesterday when I was ready to book, it had changed to March 29. :sad1:
