I would like to try to take DD5 on POTC this time -- she's a big chicken-- but want to warn her about the drop. IS it at the begining or the end- I can never remember! Also, how have you explained the ride so as to easy fears? Thanks.

I think the drop is more towards the middle. To ease fears, I just keep reminding them that it is all pretend. The cannons aren't real and the fire isn't real. If the fear is too much, just tell them to close their eyes. Good Luck!

The drop is not the very first thing on the ride but it is definitely in the beginning of the ride.

It is scary because you see the skeleton and hear a scary voice and then it gets very dark as you drop.

As for your child, I had 1 child who was scared at 5 and 2 who were Ok with it at 3 and 2. So it all depends on the kid.

It is a small drop (feels bigger cause its dark) in the beginning of POTC. You'll know it's coming when the boat is heading towards the loud "Dead Men Tell No Tales" which repeats over and over . .then the seagull says "rough waters ahead" I love that part!

My DS was 5 when we first went to WDW in 1999 and we didn't tell him and he was o.k. with it . . .in fact, I think the less they know the better they are only because they'll conjur up all this unecessary fear and not want to go on certain rides.

POTC is our favorite ride!

Take her on a 5' slide. Tell her that if she can handle that, she can handle the drop on POTC. That could give her a little confidence.

Let me know how it works because thats what I telling my timid DD4. :teeth:

Also, my daughter is geared up for POTC after doing the Virtual Safari on the Lion King 1 1/2. She loves the lion king, and she gets the biggest kick out seeing Timon and Pumba as characters. She even wants to do haunted Mansion. That has to be one of the best extras on all the Disney DVDs

Oh gosh thanks a ton....I guess I had a brain fart there for a minute......hehehe. How could I forget.

I'm pretty sure it's in the middle of the ride. I wouldn't worry too much it's not that steep.

Well I would define it as being at the beginning of the ride. When the ride starts out, you go through some caves, then you pass the beach where the skelton has a sword through him and there is the crab that moves. Then you come around to the left and on your right is the skeleton at the helm of a ship's wheel. On the right is the talking skeleton head that says "Dead men tell no tales" and other spooky statments. Then you drop. I consider that the beginning of the ride.

I'm not questioning the accuracy of that statement because I really do not know how big it is but it sure doesn't seem that big to me. I wouldn't rate it much over 5 ft. by the feel of it.

It is definately in the beginning of the ride like stated just after the skeletons and before you enter the part with the ship firing on you.

I wouldn't even mention it because quite frankly it happens so fast and it is unseen that it is over before you even know it. No advanced fear that way. And it is not all that scary anyway.

Hmmm.... I don't think it's 14 feet. I think maybe 5 or 6. Unless someone has actual documented height measurements. The only thing that gives it a ways is you year a few screams here and there.

It is very short, but it occurs in pitch darkness.

It is toward the beginning of the ride. It is coming up after you pass the skeletons and occurs right after the talking skull and crossbones appears on the left wall.

I wouldn't have thought it would be 14 feet either, but if you think about it, it makes sense. How long do you think the boat is? I'd guess 9-10 feet long. If the drop were only 5 feet long, the front of the boat would be at the bottom before the top started to come down. If you think about how that drop works, it is rather like a slide. Once the whole boat is on "the slide" it probably only slides an additional 5 or 6 feet, but add in the length of the boat and it would be more. Sort of like if you put a 6 foot person on an 8 foot slide lying down. Once they let go, they'd only slide about 2 feet before their feet hit the ground.

Ah I see it makes sense now. However that would be the length of the slide. I wonder what the actual drop in height is?
