Hi:

How bad is it for winter driving along the I75 in the months of dec,jan or feb. Is there a certain state where you know you are out of the snow/ice storm area heading south?

Thanks,

Deb.

By the time that you get south of Atlanta, Georgia, you should be okay. Unless you hit it at a bad time and have some ice. Really, you probably aren't totally safe until you get to Florida. I spent a very cold night in Valdosta (south Georgia) in an rv--it got down to 17 degrees that night!

Hi:

Do the southern states put a anything on their roads to prevent sliding, if it starts snowing or freezing rain like we do here in Canada?

Deb.

Mybe we down on I-75 salt and sand on the roads a liitle bit. But if there's ice and snow it will have melt down some before we even get out on the roads. We close everything that is possible to close down.

So be careful us southen does not get out in the snow and ice because we can't drive in the stuff.

Impossible to say. We had made plans to go to Nashville one year for Thanksgiving and an ice storm hit and closed just about everything between Chicago and Nashville. We started to try to make it anyway (Three hours and thirty miles later we went back home).

We get a light dust of snow that is alot snow for us. We don't usually get snow and ice ecer rarely. When do we shut down everything schools, work, and public transportation and anything else that can be shut down.

Rule thumb here is if see snow of the ground just go back to bed that day everything is close. A light dust of snow would shut us down.

We have taken I75 2 years in a row and my inlaws live in Florida every year for 6 months for the past 13 years. We have had no problems with weather heading to Florida and we go in Feb. My in-laws have gone in Oct. then headed back to Canada in Dec. Then 2 weeks later head back in Jan. and then head back here in April. They have hit nothing really bad going with I75. If you go Niagara way then you get hills and then the snow can be really bad. The only time we've hit it really bad was 2 years ago and we hit freezing rain on the way back and it started in Kentucky and all the way through Tennessee. Once we hit ohio it turned to rain and then snow again.
It will be I75 again in Feb.06 if we go.

I've been lucky enough to drive down 75 at sometime during those months and the highway has been in fine shape - of course, any ice storm would keep me off the road - I do lots of driving all winter long but I also keep an eye on the weather channel so I know when and where to go. :moped:

Okay thanks everyone, we need to check the weather and road conditions ahead of us and if it is icy get off into a motel.

Much appreciated.

Deb.

I have been in KY for the past 2 winters and would suggest mountain driving during the daylight. The bad areas here are from the I71-75 split below Cincinnati to just north of Lexington, and from exit 87 to the TN border. I was stuck just north of Mt Vernon KY in a snowburst for 2 1/2 hours last February around 5 AM--once I made my destination south I could not go back north. After a nap around 11:00 it was all clear for the drive back. The larger cities presalt and put liquid deicer on the highways, but once you are out of the urban areas, watch out.
