First, My thoughts are with those whom have lost so much.....

We are leaving on Friday to drive to WDW from Texas. Can anyone tell us where we might have trouble with gas etc. We will be taking the trip from Dallas, to Montgomery AL, to Columbus GA then head down to Orlando. Please advise if you can.

Thanks

First of all - good luck with your drive - it seems like you will be taking I-20 across - if so, you will have problems in Montgomery - advice - bring gas cans with gas just in case.

When we evacuated for Dennis - we brought 15 gallons with us - I can tell you we have family in N. LA, MS. & AL and they are all having problems with getting gas - there is flooding in N. MS & Al - not just in the south - remember that there are alot of people wanting to get back home to access the damage, even though they are being told to stay put. Expect to be sitting in traffic, but once you get out of LA/MS it shouldn't be too bad.

I would also recommend that you contact AAA if you are a member, they have have info for you concerning gas.

I have some business colleagues in Jackson, Mississippi (I-20 and I-55) and they said that city is a mess as well. The schools have announced that they will be closed through Labor Day and there is still a lot of debris and power out.

The Mississippi Department of Transportation says that "Interstates 55 and 20 as well as U.S. 49 from Jackson to Seminary are open but motorists should exercise extreme caution and travel with patience due to excessive debris."

You really might want to consider taking I-30 from Dallas up to Little Rock, I-40 from Little Rock to Memphis, then take US 78 from Memphis through Birmingham into Atlanta, then pick up I-75 south out of Atlanta into Florida. Its going add significantly to your drive time, but reports I've heard out of Jackson, MS indicate that this may be a better route than trying to take I-20 across.

I could be wrong, but I believe it's illegal to transport cans of gas in motor vehicles except to get them from the gas station to your home or place of business. To transport them inside a motor vehicle would require placarding.

I live in Central Fla. and I remember how it was last summer trying to get gas and it was nothing compared to what they are going through up there. You're going to have a tough time going anywhere because there are a lot of people who live there that are going to be taking the routes around the area that you are being told to take. My advise to you is either fly or cancel your trip. I know that sounds drastic, but you could be sitting in traffic forever trying to get here and that would not be my choice for vacation.

(I just came back from getting gas and had to wait in line for 25 minutes to get gas for $2.69 a gallon. Two stations I went to were out of gas!)

Oh Boy!!!!!!! Carrying one gallon of gasoline is like carrying 14 sticks of dynamite. You gotta be nuts. That's a fact. I use to work for a major oil company.

Leave off hours (night time).

I wish you and your family the best of luck for a safe and incident-free drive. Please let me know how it goes. I'm not leaving until November, but I'm not sure things are going to improve much by then!

Have a SUPER trip!!!!!!!!

We are in northern AL and have not had any gas shortages here, but the prices have gone up to around $3/gallon. We're in the same boat as the OP with a trip planned for this weekend and are mostly concerned with the availability of gas in GA after seeing the frenzy in ATL yesterday. Whether it was unfounded or not, it still had an effect of the availaibilty of gas.
