Driving to parks from Disney hotel

I've been reading a lot of posts about people driving from their hotel to parks at WDW. And I was just wondering if you still have to pay for parking? And what is the big advantage of driving instead of using the buses. The buses do run frequently correct? How much time are you really saving driving yourselves? We are staying at the POFQ in October, we are driving, we will have our car. I just want to give my husband a good reason why we should drive to the parks. Thanks!

Parking is free if staying onsite.

I am not a fan of the buses. Sometimes there is a long wait (particularly at park closing) and they are often standing-room only. After a long day in the parks, the last thing I want to do is stand on a bus for 20-ish minutes. I prefer the comfort of my own car (whether it be my car or a rental...I've done both) where I am guaranteed a comfy seat and don't have to listen to other people's kids have meltdowns because they're overtired.

At POFQ in Oct., you'll likely be sharing a bus with POR. They'll generally pick up and drop off at POFQ first, which makes for a longer trip to the parks. I am not sure of an estimated time savings. For me it's about not standing arm to arm with a sweaty stranger on a bus.

All parks now have separate buses from POFQ & PORS in the a.m. I think that starts about 90 minutes before park opening, and continues until 11am.

After 11am, MK & DHS continue to have separate buses all day (unless some special circumstance supersedes it.) AK & Epcot have buses shared by POFQ & PORS, but I think (not sure) Epcot goes back to separate buses for a while around park closing.

It's really a personal decission. I have done both, and I very much prefer taking the bus.

Driving to MK is a particular PITA. Taking the bus is easier and faster.

We always drive mostly because I take public transportation everyday for work (3hrs round trip) so when I am on vacation having a car is really nice. It also helps that we can store the stroller in the trunk and not have to deal with waiting for busses or boats (except for the ferry to the TTC). It is really a personal choice, and my choice is to drive. :) I did the who Disney Transport back in 2007 and well, lets just say I don't want to do it again.

We prefer to drive ourselves. It's almost always a shorter trip by car than by bus, in my experience. We usually stay at a value resort, so our car is parked reasonably close to our room. We get dressed in the morning, pack up our breakfast, hop in the car, and eat on the way to the park. Saves a LOT of time (and we eat more healthily)! On one trip, we compared the time it took at park closing to get from both DHS and Epcot by splitting up. My sister and I parted at the exit to the park; she (and her kids) headed for the bus lines, and my daughter and I headed for the parking lot trams. I was ALWAYS back at our hotel (POP) before she was- and had had time to shower before she walked in the door. At the end of a long day, the last thing I want is to stand in line for a bus, then stand on the bus (packed in like sardines), then walk from the bus stop to my room. As far as going to MK, yes, you have to park at the TTC and then cross the Lagoon to get to MK, but that's part of the fun. You ride the tram in from the parking lot and then take either the ferry or the monorail to get to MK. Ferry and monorail riding are NOT part of our everyday lives- it's FUN to ride the monorail at Disney!

If you are traveling with little kids, having your own car is a bonus because that stroller will be in your trunk. It's a pain to have to manage small children and a folded stroller on a packed bus (usually no seats available)- and imagine at night, if that child is asleep in your arms, and you have to deal with holding a sleeping kid, balancing yourself and child, and deal with stroller, other kids, bags, etc. SO much easier to throw everything into your trunk, strap the kids into their car seats, and drive back to your hotel. (We always had DD's car seat in the airplane with us, then lugged it around in a special bag with shoulder carrying strap, so not a big hassle to fly/travel with the car seat).

If we are staying onsite & not doing a day trip we never drive to the parks. The last thing I want to do is ride on one of the trams or have to wait for them, I enjoy the bus rides. You meet a lot of interesting people. The only resort we ever had issues coming or going from were the values, especially Pop.

We're drivers as well. IMHO, the only park where driving is not an real advantage is Magic Kingdom. You still have to take a boat or monorail over if you drive.

To me, the biggest perk of staying at a Disney resort is not having to drive. We've driven down from Maryland once, and once we got checked in, our minivan sat for 10 nights without us touching it (we were in a BWV but I had packed enough snacks and drinks and things that we didn't need to even go to the grocery store).

When we stay off site, the one thing I dislike is having to drive! Of course I like it when we have a much larger condo (the DVC ones are smaller than the Marriott ones) but driving isn't fun for me!

I agree that parking for the MK is a pain. I haven't done that in many years. We always have park hoppers so would go over from elsewhere and back.

Some folks hate the buses. I don't mind much - at least I'm not driving!

We prefer driving. No waiting for buses, especially at the end of a long day. Being in a supercrowded bus with a bunch of strangers banging into you with their tired children, is not very fun, IMO.

I don't mind driving to the MK. Riding the boat is part of the excitement for me. Driving to the parks is nice because you don't have to ride a crowded bus back to your resort at the end of the night. However it is also nice to not drive at all. We stayed at POFQ this past October and only used the buses (and the boat to Disney Springs). It was a great vacation.
