I've done this a few times, but never on April Vacation week in MA. I think I'd like to stay in Rocky Mount NC the first night because of the kids. How crowded are the hotels for the popular drive days? With the airline tickets running $600 each from New England I figure there will be lots of drivers stopping there as it's a good place to stop (hotels with pools and all). Should I make a reservation? I don't want to be locked in if I make great time and can make it to SC on the first day.

This whole "having to travel around school vacation" thing is new to me.

Hi Mr B.

I posted this on another Thread:

We drive from NH - We stay offsite at a timeshare , so we need a vehicle anyways so I rent a mini van from whomever gives me the best deal. Anyways, we take I-84 - To I-81 ( it cuts out all the city -crazy traffic - NYC, NJ & DC -though it tacks on some miles, it does not take any longer in my opinion and my experience & it is a much more beautiful ride) then we cut across Rt 64 to Richmond which is our 1st stop for the night. We stay at the Fairfield Inn by Marriott overnight ..BEAUTIFUL, new hotel and you can find great deals at this place. The next morning we jump on I-95 right there and continue on. We love driving down, my daughter loves to stay in the hotels & we look at it as extra time together. Have fun.

I also stay in Rocky Mount on the way back ( I leave later in the day the lst day) - I have the Holiday Inn @ 200 Enterprise Dr booked ...it isnt 'cheap" but it is nice & safe- I got tired of staying in places where u had to talk to the clerk through a bullet-proof shied.

We stop "half way" because I like having my little one sleep in a bed around her normal bedtime. I enjoy a good nights rest too.

I am from the South Shore , Mass. We are thinking of doing a driving vaca. on April Vacation to. I havent commited to it though , the thought of being in the car for 20+ hours is making me hesitate to commit.

I can tell you from experience that the Friday before is a horrible time to leave. I did this a couple of years ago, not realizing it was April Vacation and fought traffic from Providence to Maryland. It was so bad the lines out the NJ turnpike rest stops were over a mile long for just about all of them.

Yup, that is why I go around all that mess :thumbsup2

About how long does it take to drive down?? DH has a business trip in Orlando during April vaca and I'm trying to talk him into driving down so we can all go with him and hang by the pool all week.
