Hi All ~ I'm trying to convince my kids and dh to head to Florida beaches and a couple of Disney days in December. I'd like to try driving this time. Any advise about driving down from Mississauga on Dec 27th-ish? Thanks! Sandra

I am sure the drive isn't much different than heading down in early Dec and we have never had any problems at all always clear roads and light traffic.

Sandra, we drove down right after Christmas for New Year's 2002. We went down the I 75 and didn't have any problems.

However, on the way home we had a snow storm hit overnight during our stopover in Knoxville. We left again early the next morning and it was very slow going with stalled cars on the I 75 in the deep crunchy snow. It didn't bother DH but I was a nervous wreck. We had our Windstar van back then. We didn't see a snow plow for quite a while and when we finally did we just followed him. I was really glad to get out of the mountains. We knew the storm was coming and should have kept going the night before to get out of the mountains before the storm hit but we waited too long to cancel our reservation plus DH was tired. Next time I'd stay an extra day at Disney! ;)

Hi Sandra. We've done this twice (from Toronto) and will be doing it again this year.

We have a completely normal Christmas, spend Boxing Day packing like maniacs, and head out early on the 27th. Both times we've had great driving weather with completely clear roads on the way down. The second time we had a light snowfall when we hit Windsor on the way back. Although we always pack winter boots and ski jackets just in case, I'm glad to say we've never needed them. In the car we just wear polar fleece jackets and running shoes.

The book "Along the I-75" by Dave Hunter is a fantastic book! It tells you all the chain gas stations, restaurants and hotels at each exit. In the winter the inner (I-75) route is recommended over the coastal (I-95) route.

The kids actually look forward to the drive down (but not the drive back!).

Cheers,

Hi,
I am from Australia, and planning to drive Toronto to Florida with my family in April next year. Is there anywhere else where I can find information on suitable and leisurely drives south? Having never been on the east coast of the US or Canada for that matter, I would love to drive all the way to florida after seeing Niagara, Toronto etc, but wondering what time frame I would need to do a nice easy drive down to Disney. Any advice would be much appreciated. :thumbsup2
