We have driven Colorado to SoCal numerous times and Colorado to New England once in 2008. But not on the same trip. What time of year are you thinking about?
Wow! You lucky ducK!! I love road trips! I've been on several big ones myself!
I'm curious about your children's ages. What kinds of things do they like? When I have planned out road trips, I've always tried to get in a little something for everybody.
How much time to do you have?
Have you been to Mt. Rushmore? Crazy Horse? Yellowstone, Grand Canyon? I would put those on your lists of must sees.
Gee...there are so many things out there to see. It's hard to choose.
To get some more good ideas, also go to the California and the West boards. Lots of good advice there.
We drove from Michigan to Vegas once, with a 3 year old! It wasn't a particularly difficult road trip, there were lots of things to stop and do along the way (we stopped to see buffalo's, made a detour to Meramac Caverns in Missouri, restaurants and museums in Albuquerque, etc.).
What route are you planning to take? Maybe you can plan your route around specific activities....like a historic tour in Savannah, certain restaurants you've seen on Food Network or Travel Channel, or other theme parks like Schlitterbon water park in Texas. The possibilities are endless!
I've driven from California to Chicago with a 14-year-old and a 7-year old, California to Virginia with a 6, 12, and 13 year old, and California to Boston with teenage girls. We try to see everything we can along the way. It all depends on how much time you want to take, the ages of the kids, and what you want to see along the way.
Thanks Everyone! I have an 8 year old and we travel alot by car and/or plane. Our family loves to go on Road trips! Alot of time it is not just getting to our destination, but kind of just foing where the road takes us. We have a DS, DVD player, and could read books for hours.... We are thinking about a summer time trip..

How much time do you want stop along the way? As for the western part of your trip I would suggest:
1. A more northerly route on I-80/90 that takes you to Yellowstone/Grand Tetons. Stay a couple days there at minimum. Then come down I-15 to So Cal
2. A more central route on I-70 thru Denver to I-15 and into So Cal. You can get to Denver on I-70, 80 or 90 in the east. The drive on I-70 from Denver to Las Vegas is the most scenic of the Interstate drives and one you should do
Both of the above would take you thru Las Vegas which is worth a stop.
I think the above two would be more scenic for going to and returning from DLR. But if you have done either you can take
3. A more southerly route on I-40 thru Grand Canyon country. Possibly continue also thru the Four Corners region
4. A really southerly route on I-10 that goes thru Carlsbad.
