What is the drive like from the airport?

We are renting a car so will be picking it up when we land :cool1:

Hi Kitty,

Whereabouts on I Drive are you staying? The tourist travel guides will tell you to take the I-4 down to I Drive, but it's often better to take the 'back' roads if you've never driven out there, gives you more time to get familiar with the car and roads and it only takes a few minutes longer :thumbsup2

Check out http://www.kissimmee-us192.com/british/sfb_via417.html for specific route map on it, and also check out their driver's guide as well, it covers the basics, such as turning right on a red, undertaking, etc.

easy peasy, out off airport (approx 500 meteres) turn right onto main road, then around 1/2 a mile down the road before a free-way bridge turn left onto it.just head down it paying tolls as you go(in cash and dont sign up for the prepay sunpass unless heading down to Miami) and after around 45min tun of to i drive

As others have said its quite an easy route, it's pretty much a straight road really. Just make sure you know which exit to take :)

There's some great maps online, the one a previous poster has shared is a good one :)

Thanks everyone :) I'm ok as I don't drive, my boyfriend will be the one doing all the driving but I have to 'navigate'! Didn't want it to be too confusing!! :)

The most difficult part initially for him will be turn lanes - often a major left will have two left turn lanes, the one nearest the straight lanes is the slower, the one by the middle of the road is the faster lane.

If you are turning right at a set of lights and the lights are red, and you are in the lane nearest the kerb, you can treat it like a normal junction, just pull out when clear. UNLESS there is a sign up hanging with the lights that specifically says 'no right on red' or it is an arrowed filter light (i.e. red arrow).

on the interstates you just have to keep your wits about you as the outer lane (what we would consider the slow lane) will become the exit lane for the next exit. watch the signs overhead, when you see one just make sure you shift into the lane UNDER the place you need to go - the US system works this way rather than having separate slip roads.

Apart from that, relax and have fun! I love driving on the US roads, much prefer them to over here

It really isn't that bad!! just remember, the basics are the same as the uk. the road layouts are a tiny bit different, i can't tell you how many times i take the wrong slip to come out of the festival bay car park and end up facing traffic on its way in to the car park, and i've been there at least a dozen times!! (DW is a huge fan of Bass Pro Outdoor World there - where else can you buy a speedboat, a gun, archery equipment, get a fishing lesson in a live pool AND a great selection of clothing?!?) That place is my nemesis. It's the only one i have trouble with though!!

As i posted above, the right on red light rule and the freeways are the biggest oddities, and also bear in mind on the freeway you can undertake, so if you're checking your mirror to pull over towards the 'slow' side of the road double check the speed of the car in the mirror, it could be going faster than you.

Once you've made your first wrong side of the road turn you will be into it... strange how it works but it registers in the subconscious. Driving on the left of the car instead of the right helps with it as well oddly!

one easy one to learn is the driver is always sat to the middle of the road.over there and over here
