Driving from Philly

we live in levittown, just a bit north of philadelphia...we usually drive straight thru from levittown to wdw and can make it in 15 hours...normally we set out at about 11:00pm and make it to the "world" in time for dinner...we are leaving on thursday afternoon (after the kids get home from school) at about 3:00pm and are planning to stop in lumberton, nc on the way down to spend the night...i'm thinking we are going to get slammed in DC with traffic as we will be hitting that area at around 6:00 or so...any route suggestions regarding how i can avoid that area....
thanks in advance...

We're driving from near Princeton to WDW in a couple weeks. The plan is to leave at noon on Wednesday and drive through to Richmonf Hill (near Savannah) where there is a hice Hampton Inn. (My best friends daughter lives there, and passes it on her way to work every day, and "checked it out" for us).

We'll get up and moving around 8-9 am and be to WDW around 1-2 in the afternoon.

If we left at 5:00am we could drive all the way through and be to WDW around midnight, but I can't get the morning of the 30th off from work. We don't have young kids, just an 18 DS who travels very well. That makes a big difference IMHO.

I live in Burlington, NJ about 30 min north of Philly and for the life of me cannot figure out how you guys make it there so fast!!
Last year it took us 20 hours (with a 3 year old and 18 month old). We did make many stops, and had a flat, but I don't think they added up to 5 hrs. WE set the cruise control for 5 miles above speed limit in each state, and did the 95 to rt 4 route. Where did we go wrong?

We can make the trip in 16 - 18 hours depending on many factors:

1. The time we leave. Leaving really early (1-2 am) or later in the day (6-7 pm). This way we tend to miss the rush hour traffic.

2. How long you stop. We usually stop for 1/2 hour at a McD's to let the kids run around and then feed them in the car. All other stops are just gas & potty stops (less than 10 minutes).

3. The amount of traffic/construction you encounter - can't help these delays other than to check with AAA regarding construction.

4. We feel comfortable traveling 10 miles over the stated speed limit if traffic conditions allow.

5. We always bring tv/vcr for car and toys to entertain the kids. Try a book on tape.

6. Our golden rule - if airfare is $200 or less per person, we fly. I have a hard time justifying to DH why he should spend 2+ days of his vacation on driving. As a domestic goddess, vacations are no vacation for me.

Good luck planning your trip. :sunny:
