Does anyone know of an online map or service where you could find the midpoint of your trip? We are driving down and would like to stop to sleep, but would like to make arrangements somewhere ahead of time. This is our first time driving down.

Thanks,
Lisa

We are driving down in April and have AAA. They told us the midpoint from where we live (NYC area) is Fayetteville, NC which is 550 miles from us. What I did was book a few Marriott hotels at different point because I don't know when we will want to stop (depending on how the kids are holding up and what kind of time we're making). With Marriott you can cancel your reservations the same day by 6PM. You may feel like driving more the first day so you're a little closer the next day. Good luck, Linda

I live in Altoona, and we always have stopped in Savannah, GA. It's past half way, but very "doable" on the first day. If I remember correctly (haven't driven there in about 12 years), we left around 6AM in the morning and we were in Savannah by supper time. We also packed a small bag with swimming trunks and the next day's clothing. We ordered a pizza and took a dip that evening.

The next morning we left Savannah at around 7AM, stopped in Daytona for lunch (is the Wendy's still across from the Speedway?), and checked in at Dixie Landings (old school!) at around 1:30.

I like traveling as far as possible the first day. That way, we have more time on the first day. A quick freshening up and we're on the way to a park!

Hi there!! I work in Altoona! (a store in Lakemont!) This post really helped me- we flew for our last trip, but are really considering driving down this time. My husband is a teacher, and we are thinking of leaving right after school, and driving most of the night to get there- do you remember about how many hours it took to get to Savannah? Thanks!

Go 'Toona town!

According to Mapquest, the driving time from Altoona to Savannah, GA is 11 hrs., 48 minutes. If you factor in rest stops, a fuel stop, and a food stop, it will likely take about 12 hrs. and 45 mins. (just my guess).

Also, if you leave after school (3 or 3:30) you will hit Washington during rush hour. This would be a major delay. You might want to avoid the beltway altogether.

BTW, I am also a teacher (at AAHS).

You can avoid the beltway by taking US-522 through Winchester. That's actually how Mapquest routed the trip.

I'm from Allentown and we always drove straight through. We leave around 9 pm and arrive around 2pm the next day, it works well for us. I think that if you stopped off in South Carolina or Georgia you would be fine.
