Driving from Ontario, how much do you spend on gas?

I'm trying to consider all options of travel to Disney for our trip this fall and I am looking into how much it would cost us approx. to drive from about an hour north of Toronto to Disney. For those who make a similar drive how much do you normally spend on gas? How many times do you fill your tank there and back? It costs about $40 to fill our tank but I have no idea what kind of gas mileage we have. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

last time we drove which was last year i wrote down how much in gas. (we live in london) I only did this on the way there but we spent a total of $261. We have a dodge journey and it costs around 70 to fill it up. We started with putting 76$ in our car and stopped 4 times for gas (worked it out with lunch/dinner stops so not always at a point that it needed to be fully filled.)
We left at 3:30 am and didnt stop until 9:20 to fill up. We then stopped for lunch and added a bit more, then again at dinner. The next day we only stopped once because the first day we did most of our driving. We spent the most on gas here obviously, down there we spent 60 the first time, then 32,43 and 50. Hope that helps

We spent $575. last Dec/Jan including 22 in Orlando. We drive a Hyundai Santa Fe and have a roof top carrier on top which lowers our mileage. Also we are fully loaded inside with 4 adults, including a 6'3" 23 year old. We drive straight through leaving Ottawa around 8 am and don't stop for gas until the PA border, next stop Fredericksburg VA then somewhere in SC. Last fill up in Brunswick Isles GA. We have perfected where the cheapest gas is with over 15 return drives in the last 20 years. Air fares from Ottawa are expensive plus renting a car. The kids 21 and 23 can't drive the rentals and it is ultimately less expensive to drive. I do realize that there is depreciation on the car but we have two cars and one is always under warranty so I don't worry about repairs. Once the car is 5+ years old the depreciation is set no matter what the mileage I have found

We found GasBuddy to be pretty accurate. We live in London and drove down last August. I drive a 2011 Dodge Grand Caravan (in Canada, about $80 to fill and with highway driving I need to fill about every 7 hours or so). The website estimated us at just under $350 r/t and we ended up spending $368 (I kept track just because I was curious to compare). I just plugged in our info for this year and it estimated $384.

The link that kellyla posted is a very good one. It will calculate the gas cost of your trip based on the type of vehicle and distance travelled. Since the price of gas can very tremendously from state to state, we used this site to give us a ball park estimate for our last couple of trips to WDW and found it quite accurate.

I just plugged in the data for our car (2003 Volvo) and it showed a return trip cost of $370 for 2,570 miles using 93 gal. of regular gas. It also shows me the location for several gas stops along the way with the current price for the gas at each location.

Take a look, you may find it really helpful

Wow, I've never been so glad to have a Toyota Echo. We drove down in October 2010 and it took three tanks each way--with gas so insanely cheap in the U.S. it worked out to a shade less than $200 there and back.

Thanks for the replies! It estimated that we would spend about $340 on gas. I'm having a hard time convincing my DH to drive even though it would likely save us at least $300 in travel costs. He really hates driving long distances.

What a great link! I priced it out and for a 2005 Chevrolet Uplander (van), it gave me an estimate of $440 (rounded up). I will have to remember this link for next March to compare driving versus flying. If our kids would be good for the drive, my husband & I would enjoy taking our time & driving to Disney.

If the savings is only going to be $300 in OOP expenses think about what the cost is in terms of time and wear on your car. Also, factor in a pre-road trip inspection and an oil change before and after the trip. In the end your savings is a lot closer to zero.

Sorry, not trying to be Debbie downer.

Las May, we drove from Ottawa and it cost us a little over $500 for our return trip and gaz around Disney. We were driving our Montana and had to fill our tank every 6 hours or so and it was an avarage of $50 each tank.

Unless you're driving from Siberia, don't worry about the oil change; it's once every 7500 miles, generally, and I don't think anyone drives anywhere near that much return. Time is of course an issue: depending on where you live and your proximity to an airport, you could be in Disney five hours from now. But then again, unless you have Magical Express arrangements you're probably going to have to rent a car down there.
The drive has to be considered as part of the vacation. If you hate to drive, by no means attempt this one: it's gruelling for those who aren't used to it.

Thanks for the link to that great website! I will see what it says for our drive from Woodstock as well as for our summer road trip.

Happy planning everyone :thumbsup2

Thank you. I guess we are just going to wait and see what flight prices are like over the next couple of months and decide closer to when we leave. Last trip we bought our plane tickets 3 months out and it was only $600 (rounded) for a return trip for 2 adults. So I'm hoping we get lucky again this time.

I have no idea what you drive but the vast majority of cars require an oil change every 5000km....at the absolute max.
