hi
anyone driving from Oakville around Xmas time ? if so what time of day would u leave and what route would u take?

thank you so much!!!!!
Disney ...........here we come!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!whoo hoooooo

We're leaving from Hamilton on January 1st and are taking the route through Detroit and down I-75. Because we are travelling on a holiday, I wanted to be on a busier, more populated route (hence more places open, I hope!);)

Hey there,
We've done both ways just this last Jan-Feb (2009) and we were pulling our trailer. Remember the horrible major snowstorm we got near the last week of Jan? Here in Port Dover it was over my knees in our driveway.
We left the day after. What should have taken 10-11 hours that first day took us over 16. We went thru detroit down I-75. What we got in major snow here, the folks in Ohio and Kentucky got hammered with the freezing rain. We didn't encounter roads that were impassible but the trees and hydro lines were devestated. But what really got us puzzled is that the people there DO NOT know how to drive in adverse weather situations. Watching them was more work than actually driving in it.
Coming home though, we came up thru the WV mountains. That was a unique and fairly straight forward drive but the weather was awesome and we had no problems what so ever.....
I would definately do both ways again but most definately check and re-check the weather forecast. People that are below Ohio & PA are not used to driving in bad weather so a forecast would make or break my route decision!

Hi irisesareblue! My oldest DD plays competitive soccer in your lovely city. Been making the trip every other day the entire summer. lol

I'm also in Hamilton, and thinking of driving down. We're there Nov 30-Dec 7. I'm just not sure which route to take. But thanks for the advice.

Hi there
Can someone pls help me.... We usually drive down I95. Around Macon there is a Best Western that has rooms that includes free buffet breakfast. Does anyone recall the exact location? It was such a great deal!!! We can't seem to find their business card.

thank you so much!!!!

Here's a map of the 2 Best Western's in the Macon, GA vicinity.
One off I-75 the other off I-475.

Great post.

For driving weather should be the determining factor when driving down to WDW. Most weather systems develop in the west, head east, and hit I-75 prior to I-79, I-77.

Havent done the drive for some time but when i lived in Oakville we would leave early (say 4am) so that kids slept for the first few hours in the car.

Hi there!:goodvibes We always take the I-79, I-77 route from the Niagara Region, and even did when we lived in Haldimand-Norfolk region. DH simply didn't want to add the extra time to travel over to Detroit and catch the I-75 down. But I would check the weather as other posters have said up until the day you are leaving - have a route planned for both ways and then pick the one with the better 24 hour forecast while you're travelling.
We are playing with the idea of using a route we just took in May over to Richmond (we used mapquest from the Peace Bridge to the Nascar track in Richmond VA), and it was a great drive - no huge mountainous roads, no busy highways but a very pleasant drive - once near Richmond we were on the I-95 without having to go through any major cities, and then DH said, "hey, this would be an easy drive from here to just keep going to Disney!" :yay: So that's another option, because it was only another hour or less on our time.
Happy and safe travels!!

Well I can tell you which way we always go from Oakville. Yes we are in the same town. We too are heading down to disney this christmas. I would goto google maps and get directions From Oakville ontario to disney world. It will give you 3 options. I would print out all 3. You never know about the weather and you will want a backup route just in case.

We always go.

qew, peace bridge, I-190, I-90, I-79, US-19 do not speed, I-77, I-26, I-95, I-4.

But might try qew to I-190,I-90,1-77,I-26,I-95,I-4. as google maps says its shorter

we will be heading down to Disney for the second time this year :) as the first time was rained out. we will be driving down the end of november for 10 days after reading the posts here I will program 3 different routes incase of weather

Good thread - we are thinking of driving down on the 21st of December. We are in Sarnia, so we always take I75, but I am a bit nervous of the weather. I hate driving down, even in March! Will have to check out some of the other routes....

The problem with I-75 isnt the snow storms up at the north end. Keep an eye on the ice storms down in tennessee. The other routes have more of a problem with snow up north.

Anyone done the drive lately? What route did you take?

We just did the trip. We left 5 am saturday and am sitting in cocoa beach hotel lobby as we speak. We pull into disney today. The route we took was qew to peace bridge. I-190, I-90, I-79, us-19, I-77, I-26, I-95.

We just did the drive Nov 28 and came back Dec 8. We went down through Buffalo to the I77 through West Virgina. The drive was good actually and we mananged to beat the snow storm that Buffalo got on the way home.

That is so exciting Thumper!!! What is the weather like in Florida?
Any tips for our drive? We leave on the 21st. We cannot leave earlier than 1pm. We hope to drive staright thru since we have 3 drivers.

Subscribing...thinking of driving down for March break. We have always flown but trying to save some $ this time.:confused3

Well we are back. The drive was great. I wont do it in the winter again though. Mainly Christmas. Christmas at Disney is nutzzzzzzz. We will keep it to may. We did hit snow on the way back from Beckley back to St. Cathrines. Buffalo was a right off. From the toll plaza at US219 and I-90 to the custome booth on the canadain side was almost 2 hours. We made good time before that and after. Major lake effect snow storm. We dealt with it and made it home ok. Oh BTW I love the 4 wheel drive in my Burban lol made it easy navigating the 4 inches plus on the road. No slipping for us. Man I love this route though. Nice views even in the winter.
