Driving from NY > WDW

Hi All

We like to leave things until the last minute, so I have a fair bit of time to decide on this as we dont fly until 30th July.

Anyways up, we have to get from NY to WDW, we flew in 2009, 2 hours, 50 quid each, easy peasy, lemon squeezy.

How practical is it to drive? highways and/or Appalachian Mountain road? We have 9 nights in NY so we could sacrifice a couple if it was worth a drive?

According to Multimap, its approx 1000 miles, which sounds a lot, but tomorrow I have a meeting in Shiremoor and we are in the Black Country, so I will do almost 500 tomorrow!!!!

We done it a few years ago we wanted a big roadtrip we spent our first night in NYC then started the trip to florida but we went to Kentucky, nashville TN, georgia and then Florida on the way back up to NYC we stopped off for a night in Savannah ga North Carolina and Washington Dc we did this part in an RV The Drive was great my Hubby did all the driving and he loved it we could have done the trip back up to NYC in less time but wanted to Visit those places. Most of our drives on the way up were 4.5 hours so we could have cut a night or 2 and done longer drives

We've driven from Washington DC to Orlando via the Appalachians, but we did it over a period of days, stopping off in Boone, Charleston and Savannah. Driving Skyline Drive and the Blue Ridge Parkway is one of my all-time holiday highlights, but it's worth bearing in mind that the speed limit is 35 and 45 miles per hour respectively. On the plus side, it does mean you get to take it all in without the constant worry of having other cars cruise up behind you (in fact, we barely saw another car). Like all good things, though, you do start to get a bit blase after a while. "Oh look, yet another magnificent vista."

We've driven from Houston to Tulsa in a day (it took around 6 hours) but that's only 500 miles. I wouldn't hesitate to drive from New York to Orlando, and it's definitely do-able in one stint, but I'd be inclined to stop overnight somewhere along the way, if for no other reason that there are so many lovely places to see.

Sorry cant help you out with the drive, although it is something I plan to do the same at some stage.

We were thinking of changing our flights to Saturday the 14th and driving up to NYC, stopping off in DC to see the White House and spending a day in New York and then flying home.

Not sure how do-able that is in five/six days mind!

My Partner and I spent New Years in NYC, it was pretty spectacular!

We had a chat with Travel City Direct who pretty much said it wouldn't cost any extra to change our flights... I'm so very tempted!

I've always wanted to see the White House and my niece would love to visit NYC - even if it's only for a day!

Part of me still thinks it's a crazy idea though... 1,106 miles including DC! It's a lot of driving to do in 5 days!

We live in MA, and this summer were stranded in Orlando after our flight was cancelled We ended up renting car and driving home, 1300 miles! NYC is about 250 miles, and 3 1/2 hours away from where we live. It took us 24 solid hours of driving. So you would be looking at 21 hours on the road in a car not including stopping overnight.

It also cost us $300 in gas and $35 in tolls....


The road is a straight shot all the way, highway, like driving on the M1.

I just wanted to add that if you fly into NYC and hire a car to drive to orlando and return car in orlando they charge you a one way fee the last time we did it was $500

I think that must depend on the car rental firm. We expected to pay a one-way charge, but didn't.

I drive to WDW every 1-2 years from the Washington D.C. area. It is about 900 miles. Most of it is highway and fast going (south of Washington D.C. highways have less congestion). We go straight through with stops only for bathroom breaks and gassing up, usually takes 13 to 13.5 hours. Used to stop at restaurants on the way but the food is pretty horrible so we bring a cooler into the car with great home made meals.

Oh and on top the car rental fee there was a $500 fee for not returning the car to the place we hired from... the Whole amount was $850 for 3 days!!!!!!

The drive is long but very easy, we live in Ontario and have driven just the once. It's around 1500 miles for us and we did it over 2 days DS was 8 DD 6 and they were as good as gold. However, the drive back was just long! I suppose because all we had to look forward to was home, it wasn't as much fun

That said, if you have time to stop in Washington DC - go for it DH & I went last year for a 3 day flying visit and we had the best time ever. Loved DC, seeing the White House, Lincoln Memorial.....the list goes on!

you're going in july?
keep in mind that it can be very hot and very rainy and very stormy - so you might have a smooth drive or not....no way to know...
if it's rainy/stormy it will take you longer than planned...

also, if you're planning on stopping in DC - definitely a worthwhile stop - it is VERY hot there in the summer....and very humid.....so keep that in mind when making any touring plans..
there is LOTS to see in DC, so if it were me, i'd set aside at least two days to tour around..

also, NYC is AMAZING!!! we love it!! when we fly indirect via new york (usually how we fly), we spend the last few days of our holiday in new york - going to broadway, shopping, walking around central park and the city....oh...and eating!!
