driving from NY to WDW - how we made out

For those folks in the Northeast driving 81 to 95, here's what we experienced a few weeks age (November 1-9):

We left Syracuse around 2 AM and did the 984 miles to Savannah in 17 hours, with a 35 minute stop for breakfast and 2 additional stops for gas. We did the standard AAA route from 81-S, 66-29-17 to Fredericksburg and on to 95. The only place we saw evidence of speed enforcement was on 95 south of Petersburg, VA, but there was a LOT in both directions. Otherwise, it surprised us how few folks were pulled over, since we were doing 70-74 mph and were passed by many folks absolutely flying by. MAJOR construction around Florence, SC. Though we were traveling on weekends, we lost about ½ hour on 95 south in the Florence area when 3 lanes were cut down to 2 and the signage was confusing. On the way back, road crews were working in the area though it was a Saturday AM, and traffic was slowed considerably. We passed many other construction areas on 81 and 95, but this is the only spot that had an impact on our travel time. We also lost about 10 minutes at what looked like a very bad accident in Hardeesville, SC - always sad and sobering to see something like that.

Stayed in the Wingate Inn at Exit 94 in Savannah on the way to WDW and back - HIGHLY recommended. Very clean, huge room with coffeemaker/microwave/fridge. There's a large free breakfast buffet which seemed excellent - don't know because dh was in such a hurry to get going that we just grabbed coffee and bagels at 6 AM. We had a $79 AAA rate - there are cheaper places to stay but we think the quality justified the cost and made it easier to get a decent night's sleep (we were unconscious before 9 PM). This seems to be a good exit - I think there were 8-10 motels and a similar number of restaurants (I-95 standard Cracker Barrel/Denny's/Shoney's, etc.), laid out so you could walk between your hotel and restaurant of choice.

Made the 286 miles between Savannah and the WL in just over 4 ½ hours, traveling on a Sunday AM. We took 95-south through Jacksonville because of the time and day, but did 295-north around the city on the way back (Friday afternoon). Lots of traffic once we hit Orlando, of course. We knew it couldn't be good news that there are traffic advisory boards up along the road, and sure enough there was a jam passing through the city and a message flashing about an incident 5 miles down in the left lane. Passed it a mile later (on the right) and it seemed as if the traffic lessened as we approached the theme park exits (can that be right?).

I don't know if we'll drive again, though it was great having our own car and we used it to visit family members in Tampa, drive to golf, USO, etc., and for a side trip to Williamsburg, VA, to visit dd20 on our way back to Syracuse. This was our 4th trip driving, and though it was easier only having to accommodate 2 people instead of 5, it's still a trying experience. It did give us some nice bonding time for our 25th anniversary trip, though! Safe driving to all -

great post with helpful comments.
Maybe the next time you visit WDW, if the traffic is heavy on I-4 westbound through Orlando, you might try the Greeneway (route 417) around downtown. It is a good alternative.

Informative report.
I suppose I-95 will be under "construction" somewhere for all eternity-----

My Sister and I are driving down (with 5 kids) from Binghamton NY on 12/26 and our plans are to stay in Savannah (same exit) at Country Inn and Suites (they have an indoor pool/jacuzzi...thought it was worth a little extra to give the kids a place to unwind after the loooooong day in the car).....I was estimating about 16 hrs (if the weather is good) from Binghamton to Savannah...Looks like a good guess if it took you 17 hrs. Our goal is to hit the road at 3:00 am. We may take the beltways down, it will be Friday, day after Christmas and we're assuming the DC traffic will be light that morning...should cut approx 1/2 hour or 45 minutes off the trip.

Now lets keep our fingers crossed, throw a little pixie dust our way that we don't get the Christmas storms like we did last year!

I would certainly think long and hard about using the beltways the day after Thanksgiving. My guess is when you reach the DC area, the traffic will be heavy. Black Friday is usually quite busy with people going to the early sales that almost all shopping malls have.

If it were me, I would conside the I-81 S to I-66 to 29 to 17 to Fredericksburg, VA to make sure that I were not caught up in heavy beltway traffic, construction and possible delays. It may be a few miles further, but that is an easier drive. Since you have a long drive that day to Savannah, I would really suggest it.

Another possibility is the I-81 to I-77 to I-26 to I-95 route. That keeps you off I-95 much longer.

Just another possibility to consider.

Isn't that the day after Thanksgiving?

We have the AAA book for both routes and have driven the 81-17-95 in Fredericksburg many times (on the way to Myrtle Beach). I posted a few weeks ago and most of the Virginia area people said that beltway should be fine that morning.....

At this point we're going to take the chance and hope for the best.

Thank you so much for the detailed and informative post. We're heading out Dec 6th to drive down from central Mass so we'll be going down mostly the same route you took, and will be travelling roughly the same timeframes of leaving early early early Sat morning to try and make it to Savannah and heading back later in the day on the following Friday. So your info is very helpful! Thanks again! ::yes::

Thanks for the comments and suggestions, folks! One point I wanted to add - I went online to find out more about the accident we drove past in Hardeeville, SC. Apparently there were no fatalities, thank goodness! But several articles in the local paper mentioned that the southernmost 30 miles or so on I-95 in South Carolina are especially treacherous. There have been more than a dozen fatalities on that stretch of road this year. Therefore, a major speed enforcement program began in mid-November, in an attempt to decrease accidents in that area. So take care, and happy Disney driving to all!

I personally would not recommend going 81- in December...a long stretch of this highway is in the mountains...and is a MAJOR truck route...add snowy/slippery roads, with truckers, and a lot of other travelers who haven't a clue how to drive in the snow....your asking for trouble!....

Living in VT all my life, I've seen my share of people from "out of state" (Read CT and NY- go ahead FLAME ME)....trying to get to the ski slopes in a hurry- passing "Natives" and PLOW TRUCKS...only to find them on their roof 2-3 miles up in the median.

Stay on 95 during the winter...might not be as scenic, but it's safer.

Thanks for the tip, Brady, that's what we plan to do. And being from northern central Mass I can certainly agree with you and back up your stories about people who get stupid in the snow. It amazes me how many people in my state have grown up driving in this weather and still don't know how to do it. Of course SUVs have had a major hand in making people drive badly in the snow, they think four wheel drive means they can stop as quickly as they can start in the snow! Silly people...

Anyway, we plan on sticking to 95 as much as we can.

Oh, and have a great FIRST TRIP EVER! :)

Thanks fro sharing Frazzled.

Would you mind sharing how much, if any, tolls you encountered and paid along the trip? At this point we are planning to drive from SE PA next fall, and I know when we took the trip 4 years ago we had a few tolls to pay.

Hi, iNTeNSeBLue 98 -

No tolls at all on the route we took - 81-66-29/17-95-4. I think that 80 and 76 in PA may be toll roads, and I know that some of the alternate roads to I-4 in FL are toll roads. Sorry not to be more knowledgeable - have a great trip!

Thanks frazzled. I remember a toll in MD, Ft. MacHenry Tunnel. Our route took I95 from DE, but I80 is about the same distane in the other direction. I think we came home that way and it was less stressful.

We drove down to Disney back in February from the Buffalo NY area. The one thing we noticed was the care of snow and ice covered roads. We came home in that "blizzard" that hit the midatlantic states right before President's Day. The roads were in such poor condition. Even as far south as N. Carolina. We saw plow trucks taking care of the interstates that were the size of personal vehicles!! For those of us living in the North East who are used to dealing w/ the snow. We found traveling through most of N. Carolina, Virginia & W.Virginia during a snow storm to be diffiicult. The roads had inches of snow built up.
